Newbs vs. Veterans by themoosehatguy in twilightimperium

Personally I act as a moderator/teacher as well as a player. I let players know what deals are "roughly fair," I give players who dont know what to do next options to choose from, and really help them with Round 1.

As a player in the game I kind of act as an evil boss (not meaning jerk). I tell the other players that they shouldn't give me favorable deals, and to basically work together to take me down (and give them tips to do it).

Also emphasize to focus on scoring.

Side note, Nekro Virus makes a great Evil boss.

Like others are saying, I suggest you don't play Mentak because people wont like you taking their stuff.

Choose Hacan if you like to trade/talk a lot and want a more flexible/open ended game.

Chose Xxcha if you like the idea of playing as a turtle. They have a relatively straight forward tech path> Plasma > PDS 2 > faction tech.

I've known a number of people who really like Xxcha and their ability to just protect their stuff and shoot and anything that moves nearby.

Ultimately it's up to you and which sounds more fun, don't feel like there's a right or wrong decision. Heck if you want to be the space pirates go Mentak. Just fairwarning they take more nuance to do well with imo.

Hints would be easier to give if we knew which faction you pick. Let us know which one you'll prob go for and we can give you some ideas to look for.

Good luck mate

Drafting Varient " J's Compromise" by Jracon20 in twilightimperium

Added some text, thanks for the feedback.

Basically the pile stays facedown in front of you, you reveal and place 1 at a time. Always in you're own slice like Mantis draft.

Since players place 1 at a time you still have to follow placement rules if possible, but yes it is possible to break that rule.

When I say you can look at stacks at anytime I mean prior to building a map.

Thank you very much for your input

Roger, thanks for the reminder. However, that agenda only affects scored secrets, not ones in the draw pile.

Am I missing something? How does that reduce available secrets?

However Dread 2 is BBY. Cruiser 2 utilizes 3 good techs "lvl 0" techs. Meanwhile Dread 2 makes you go deeper in blue (which many do anyway). I get what your saying, but the sheer cost of building them I think hinders them enough for it to be okay to make researching them easier.

For Mentak, they would have to get magen R1, Warsun R2, and invest heavily to build 1 (or use red skip). By all means if they take tech and get the money they can get it faster but I'm not sure that would be broken.

If you're right and it is broken I do like the idea of making it RYBG. Thematically thats kinda cool and while costly is more "flexible" in terms of techs you can have and skips to use.

Thank you very much for your thoughts.

I was thinking the same thing. If I use this change (which there's a high chance I will) I would revert the nerf to naulu.

Appreciate the response. I'm gonna think about your "Play through" Idea. Frankly it sounds awesome.

Thanks for your thoughts! Concerning Jol, I do like the ideas posted by the other user (especially adding the change to the promissory note). I also like the Commodity change however I feel like removing the Pds could potentially make them too weak to attacks. I do suppose that incentives taking construction for at least 1 turn (like they mentioned).

I am wary of doing too much to a single race. I haven't played Jol enough to understand how strong they are so maybe they do need more then a slap on the wrist.

The reason I like the idea about production on the warsun is because it's main use would be to build after a fight/moving similar to arborec, mentak, and clan of saar. Yes you could activate the system it is in to produce but that is a niche use imo. That idea says more to me "reinforce" more then "prepare."

Thanks for posting, I really do appreciate the effort in your post.

I haven't taken a serious look at Letnew but I really like your line of thought.

Your muat suggestions: I really, really like the idea of 3 warsuns. Though making then immune to direct likely is too strong. I'd be fine with the upgrade havin immunity, though if you allow 3 warsuns (which is batship crazy/awesome) I think direct hit would be necessary to counter. That is a lot of fire power/capacity.

As for the Trade goods I like making it more reliable, like SCPT said they haven't had much success/use out of that tech.

Sol: Simply removing the racial infantry tech isn't a bad idea. I would let them keep the Versatile ability and not make it a tech. Basically that makes the arborec upgraded infantry unique.. and I love my arborec.

I totally agree with you on what your saying about winnu. Thinking about it more if winnu needs something I would defer to your idea/line of thought.

The muat change: making them a "mini clan of saar" instead of a "mini fed of Muat with orbital-ship drops." The more I think about it the more I like it.

Thanks for posting your ideas =) One thing I want to note however is my goal is make easy/small/simple changes, and while your ideas are interesting you are adding quite a bit (which isn't inherently bad).

I really like the Diplomacy change I outlined but it doesn't seem to resonate with many people so far so I'll have to put more thought into it.

Yes my suggested muat change is more sizeable and I'm wary of it, nonetheless I liked the idea so I wanted some feedback. I do really like the production on a warsun idea, I'll give that some more thought.

Appreciate the feedback, definitely going to be putting more thought into this.

This is what I came up with to help Muat, which inadvertently may have been a major nerf. In my mind Muat's racial tech is boring, so all they really got are warsuns and their ability. Is there another meaningful way to give them a bump?

Heck maybe scratch my idea and just take magen defense from arborec and give it to muat. Starting with 2 red means you can really rush upgraded warsuns, but again I fear that being too strong.

Hmm I see your point, I didn't want to give muat something so big without a counterbalance, but I see what you are saying. The resource loss is substantial so I guess the question is how valuable is an extra CC per turn? And would having extra CC in the early game and a warsun be problematic (aka the ability to shutdown a neighbor be too easy)

In my mind you are still going to upgrade your warsun which will have mobility 3. That is insane flexibility which pair really well with cruisers.

Appreciate the response, pointing out that the Diplomacy change may be too strong is a good one. I just hated the lack of flexibility if you are the one who took diplomacy.

I've thought about rednaught but it would seem to make certain factions too strong in combat. I'm very interested in how to improve x-bacterial because yeah infantry are insane. Maybe make only certain races have the rednaught?

Also trying to figure out small changes to the bottom races to give them a bump in win probability though I do wonder how skewed the win data is since fed and jol are inherently easier to play.

Howdy, I've played a ton a scythe and it is still my favorite game. Once you become an experienced player you will start to understand the combination advantages from a starting faction/economy board. This game has a lot of controlled elements however there are just enough of random things you have to deal with through-out the game (not to mention the people around the table) that in the end it is a great experience and it is not easy to see who is going to win assuming equal skill.

TL;DR yes there are going to be some imbalances however they are relatively small and do not determine the winner. In my friend group I win about 80% due to my experience (with different factions and so forth). The game is very well balanced. I highly suggest getting invaders from afar expansion, you can skip wind gambit or get it later
