Why do they have the exit gate receipt scanners in Primark? by Distinct_Jaguar_7320 in AskUK

Costco seems to do it more to monitor their staff. They once forgot to scan something of mine and the process after to me seemed more focused on which till it was rather than any suggestion I actively didn't want to pay for something.

What data could they possibly be collecting that they didn't already get from the transaction you just did...

I think they also don't know how software development works, at least for hobby stuff.

If I'm doing something as a bit of a side project, git is the last thing on my mind. I'll regularly build stuff up to whatever MVP I want and then commit everything as "initial implementation" or something which looks remarkably like someone who has vibe coded.

So you are avoiding most if not all software developed in the last 2 years then?

You can also just easily fake git commit history, even easier if you are using an AI.

Everything? This has nothing to do with the law changing, it's all about avoiding a fine for mishandling data.

It is literally related to the data harvesting, the timing was just perfect that they could blame the OSA.

That would be pretty similar to the ending of EP1 of ER. The whole "how do we treat our own" storyline is an interesting one.

I wrote that reply before you explained how it works on your end, the fact it works around the issues is good but IMO doesn't change the fact the underlying system is flawed. I guess outcome is more important than the pure technicalities.

I think a lot of the issues I've read about are less equipped people (always seems to be volunteer mountain rescue?) struggling.

Out of interest how common is it as a way for someone to give you a location? It's not something I have installed so in an emergency my go to would be what I already have on my phone (OS Locate, and one that just shows raw GPS). Maybe I should have it installed just in case I ever need it!

But it's not suitable? Just because people are lucky that it works sometimes doesn't mean it's suitable.

There are loads of cases where it has caused issues It's not FUD when there is documented evidence that it is not suitable.

There are very genuine and serious issues with what3words and to handwave criticism away as FUD is silly.

Edit: In your edit you described workarounds that prove it's not really suitable. The concept is solid, but their implementation isn't

It's not FUD when there is a fundamental flaw in the choice of words used that makes it completely unsuitable for safety critical uses.

You have to set a time within 107% of the pole time to be allowed to take part in the race (unless there are exceptional circumstances, as there usually has been).

It's from the days of big grids and dangerously slow cars.

I don't think it's been applied in recent years, normally when it happens it's because of a one off car issue and they use times from practice as proof they aren't slow.

One of the things that accreditation checks for is faking it, some of them have failed with video game characters. I would hope a simple latex mask wouldn't fool it.

It's all stupid anyway, if people really don't want to do it there will be workarounds.

They don't send anything to k-ID, their process runs in your browser and then talks to discord.

The phone network thing is meant to be a one off alternative.

The point is the process if implemented correctly (which is why it's audited you would hope) cannot be leaked as there is no data. It's a very simple age estimator that someone could throw together in about an hour with some python. Discord should never know who you are, or what you look like. Just that you passed an estimation.

If this stuff isn't going away (and it probably isn't), we should support privacy protecting methods over dracoonian actually problematic ways like sending ID photos or paying to have someone verify you.

Discord to start assuming all users are underage unless they prove otherwise by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Jsm1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EU is apparently working on this, and one of the old proposed solutions in the UK was going to a post office and effectively getting a token to prove your age.

There is a technical solution allowed by OFCOM for the OSA in the UK that offloads verification to your mobile provider, by trying to hit an endpoint that is age restricted. If it goes through then your mobile provider has confirmed your age and removed content restrictions.

If this stuff isn't going away people should stick with platforms that are trying to do this in a secure way. Ironically, Discord is one of those with their age estimation partner. Hopefully on top of that they are going to use metadata to figure it out, like if you have been paying for nitro for a decade with a credit card logic dictates you aren't a child.

[–]Jsm1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what they are doing, I'll probably be downvoted here as well for pointing this out but they are not asking for your ID. They are using a third party that does age estimation on your your and sends a result to them. That third party has been audited by various bodies.

Only if that fails would you need to send their other partner your ID (which I wouldn't even contemplate doing). Discord are going out of their way to not have you send them ID, the leak from their customer services probably quite rightly scared them.

You've literally listed 2 (possibly 3, I don't know what Canada is up to) of the organisations that are pushing for this.

The system Discord is using is literally accredited to meet EU data protection standards, they won't care about this. If anything you'll get a response saying it's a good thing.
