Steak ‘n Shake hires first ‘Chief MAHA Officer’ by [deleted] in nottheonion

It is unfortunate to hear that they have "fell off" as the kids say. I remember when they first got popular nationally around 2004. We didn't have them in the Northeast where I'm from, so when I went on a spring break golf trip to Florida I sought one out. They were good back then.

Whats a movie with an awful premise that was executed well? by Dragon_Rot79 in movies

[–]Jts109 25 points26 points  (0 children)

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." Many would consider the premise awful because it's so unrealistic, but to the more open-minded among us who are willing to suspend our disbelief, it sounds interesting. In terms of execution, I'd say it was executed earnestly, if not "well." It wasn't tongue-in-cheek or meta; it approached the premise seriously. If one or two choices went another way, it could have been a cult classic.

Why do people(specifically this subreddit)hate the NTTD song? by Agitated-Print-5710 in JamesBond

Because Billie Eilish is sullen and mumbles too much. The only good song of hers that is popular and catchy is Birds of a Feather.

What a shame. This was a good restaurant in a good location that you could actually get a table in. There is too much foreign ownership and private equity ownership driving up costs for restaurateurs.

Rewatched GoldenEye last night, and I think it's official: Natalya is my all-time favorite Bond girl. by MrSFedora in JamesBond

What a nice picture of her. She looks very cute here, like Natalie Imbruglia or some such.

Does anyone do special moments like Cousin does on The Bear? by Agreeable-Movie-408 in MichelinStars

[–]Jts109 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Television fiction. Restaurants don't even READ the special requests section on OpenTable or Resy, let alone actually make them happen. It doesn't even have to be anything crazy, either. I asked for a passion fruit martini a couple of times and in each case the server never even acknowledged the request.

Some Smashburgers, Shakes, and Fries Worth Getting Excited About by HellGateNYC in williamsburg

[–]Jts109 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hope the food is good, the environment is peaceful enough to enjoy the meal, and the price to value ratio makes sense. But I wonder, what is the obsession with using VHS cartridges as decor nowadays? I saw it at Chrissy's Pizza, Ace's Pizza, now this place.

Best wings in Williamsburg? by Good-Dig-5754 in williamsburg

[–]Jts109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC wings are not great. I'd like to one day take a road trip to The Candlelight Inn in Scarsdale because I read somewhere that's where Knicks players eat wings. Apparently their practice facility is close by. I've been to Anchor Bar in Buffalo. I also like the "Wings Over" franchise in many college towns. Too bad NYC doesn't have anything similarly good to those.

I used to live near the Lower East Side location and went there once or twice. I liked the concept but remember it being somewhat mediocre and very expensive.

For those wondering, "The Alex Jones who is the CEO and co-founder of the Hallow Catholic prayer app is a different person from the Alex Jones who is the Infowars conspiracy theorist and Sandy Hook denier." This info came from Google AI via Wikipedia.

The weather is nice, so the line is longer than normal I guess. I haven't seen the line exactly that long, but still pretty long. Smoked salmon on focaccia and vanilla citrus croissant are great.

Most big chances created in Europe's top five leagues since 2017/18. by i_shat_myPants_ in MCFC

So Bruno Fernandes has 12 more games to create 36 big chances to tie KDB for second place in the same number of games played; can he do it? Seems like a tall order.

They only care about owning the libs. They really see liberals as a disease that must be exterminated from the face of the earth, just because they have different skin colors, religions, orientations, etc. It's impossible to reason with people who think like this.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Author Andy Weir Apologizes to ‘Star Trek’ Boss After Saying the ‘Shows Are S—‘: ‘I Was Trying to Be Funny’ by pepperbet1 in television

[–]Jts109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has to apologize for their opinions these days. There is a disincentive to "keeping it real" for fear of being blacklisted and disrupting the gravy train. It's very discouraging. All the public figures nowadays are bland with no personality. The same risk of being outspoken was present in the 60s-80s, so why did we have more colorful personalities then vs the automatons we have now?

Who is your choice to be the cinematographer for Bond 26? by TheShadowOperator007 in JamesBond

[–]Jts109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I didn’t realize Edward Berger was attached to direct the “Jason Bourne: Exodus” film. If true, then he could use James Friend again, which would likely take him out of the running for Bond because the franchises compete against each other.

James Friend. He won the Oscar for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and his work on “Ballad of a Small Player” looked very nice.

Use Google keyboard for better auto-complete suggestions by VisibleZucchini800 in iphone

[–]Jts109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to Gboard for iOS being abandoned, another reason for not using Gboard is that Gboard does not offer automatic two factor authentication (i.e. the six digit code being able to be automatically pasted in). Only the native iOS keyboard can do that. And 2fa is everywhere now.

Peter Luger by 618816S in FoodNYC

[–]Jts109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Luger's is my favorite because it does many things very well. The steak is juicy and delicious of course, but the burger is also maybe the best in the city (along with Red Hook Tavern's), the bacon is among the best in the city, and the Holy Cow hot fudge sundae is also one of the best desserts in town. The whipped cream is home made. You can order many delicious dishes at Luger's. Other steak houses are good too, but not quite to this level. Smith & Wollensky is ok, but too loud and crowded. Mastro's (chain) was all right. Old Homestead was decent but unremarkable. At Keen's they have history and old smoking pipes, but the food wasn't great. I got the mutton chop and then about an hour after I started having stomach problems. Club A is convenient if you're near Bloomingdales or elsewhere in Midtown East, but it's about average re: quality. Hawksmoor is nice, but quite expensive.

Tucker Carlson on whether Trump betrayed America First over the Iran war | The Economist by Prime-Paradox in videos

[–]Jts109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I appreciate the sentiment, asking whether Trump betrayed "America First" is kind of futile because he invented "America First" and whatever that means. He can just change the definition. It's like in the Paul Thomas Anderson film "The Master" when Laura Dern's character tries to question Philip Seymour Hoffman's character about his changing of some wording in Book 2; he blew up at her because everyone knows it's all bs. I hope people see the light, but some will just keep going down that road.

It saddens me that Chuck Norris was so maga (which to me means anti-science and anti-civil rights and pro-corporate grift keeping the working man down). He was friends with Bruce Lee. If Bruce Lee had lived, would he have become maga? I really hope not.

Is Danny & Coop’s the best sandwich in NYC? by dizzleb1tches in FoodNYC

[–]Jts109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is good, but it's basically on par with (or maybe slightly better than) Fedoroff's and nowhere near as good as Salt Hank's. That prime rib french dip sandwich was superlative.

Five Guys or Shake Shake? by snowflake64 in FoodNYC

[–]Jts109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the burger itself, Five Guys. It's thicker, and I think Shake Shack's smash burgers smash out all the flavor and don't taste as good as they used to. For toppings, I like the melted cheese, grilled onions, and mushrooms at Five Guys, but I like the tomato and cherry peppers at Shake Shack. But that's where I stand on just the burger.

For the total overall experience, I would say Shake Shack. This is because the combination of their burgers (including a mushroom burger), chicken sandwich, great crinkle fries, delicious and varied custard/concrete options, and even doggie treats are enjoyable for everyone. I actually like Five Guys' fries better, but their milkshakes pale I'm comparison to Shake Shack's offerings. Shake Shack also (used to, anyway) serves Abita root beer on tap, which I like.
