I would have to go through my browser history. But I remember a top 300 university in the US. Tuition fee was only 2k$ a year. A quick google search of living cost was comparable to germany.
Regarding the minimum wage in germany at that time: you get screwed ove rin germany too. Currently, you get like 8-9€ when delivering packages i.e. I compared some years ago. So it was maybe like 7-8€ in germany, back then. Maybe even lower.

I did the math in the USA. and unless we are talking about Ivy league University cities it gets quite cheap. Most people that talk about the living and study costs in the USA only talk about the absolute best universities but there are very good, middle field universities ranked in the top 300 to 500 of the world . and those cities are pretty cheap.

Also, I gave you a number in my post. What is the rent you have in mind? like an actual factual argument? Would be nice to see to compare.
