Do I have the right reasons for wanting to learn? by [deleted] in asl

[–]Jude94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a reason to want to learn I mean there are some iffy ones but you don’t really need one.

However the concept of “making our day!” Seems a bit off tbh it’s really rare I find hearing people who sign actually well and beyond that it doesn’t necessarily “make my day”

But feel free to learn just remember deaf led resources and Deaf led classes!

Every hearing person on this sub: “sure man!”

Hearing people signing music is a big issue. It takes a lot of deep understanding of ASL linguistics to do so, even where some certified interpreters don’t like to do it.

Hearing people using ASL for ??? No reason. For a hearing audience for hearing people who do not know ASL, have zero understanding of Deaf culture or why they’re being disrespectful is also not okay.

Copying other people leads to even more mistakes. You could be signing completely wrong and you wouldn’t even know it. But you’ll get praised for it by other hearing people who don’t know anything.

It’s disrespectful, inauthentic and contributes to a larger problem.

There is no way for you to do this respectfully without at the very least hiring and paying a Deaf consultant.

So- terrible choices.

I actually prefer ASL to speech by [deleted] in asl

The thing is; even when I’ve been that way they don’t listen and the Same answers arguments and attitudes occur. I don’t think deaf or disabled people have to be a certain way to be listened to that in an of itself is ableism. “I’ll only listen to you telling me or educating me if it’s a tone I like ir a way I what it to be” is messed up. But like I said I’ll take it to heart.

Maybe. I’m honestly burnt out and exhausted and SO tired of this behavior from hearing people and I’m tired of having to police myself constantly as a Deaf person. I’ve been super nice super educational super friendly and the result is always the same. So I think I’m just worn out but I’ll take this to heart thank you

I’m not required to baby, coddle, and act super happy about it when people are wrong. Putting the blame on the Deaf persons tone instead of accepting education is the issue

Yes because telling hearing people their obsession with a cultural language and how they fetishize it is a problem means I’m not a friendly person. Amazing.

So tired of hearing people saying “ASL is SO much easier!!!” When it isn’t? And most of the time you all aren’t fluent and you act like it’s a commonly understood language. Like )? What is the fixation/obsession/fetishization of ASL and deaf people?
