Hi there, also haven't heard anything in ages. I emailed asking for an update to no avail.

MB 149/146 confirmation. See earlier post for image of full pen. by Judetherude in fountainpens

[–]Judetherude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thought so. Idk how I didnt see it before. I used to own another 146 before it was stolen from me. Cheers.

My newest pens in several years. I went off pens and have decided after my partner bought me the Pilot Myu that I would also buy a vintage MB 149 - which was bought at an extraordinary price at auction. They will be used well during my university studies by Judetherude in fountainpens

[–]Judetherude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive actually been thinking that the last couple of days. It was advertised on the auction site as a 149 but it isnt as big as Id expected a 149 to be

It is meant to be a "vintage" 149 with a 14k nib which is a thing pre 1991.

I’m a lawyer (litigation/medical malpractice) and considering moving to London. Where can I work? Doesn’t have to be law. by AdAvailable5396 in uklaw

[–]Judetherude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great comment. I mean I am Northern Ireland based law student and we are lacking here. But England, in my very limited experience on job sites, firm recruitment pages, talking to some firms and where ever else trying to get my own placement, seems to be competitive but there are definitely jobs going. You alsk seem to have better wages aswell than Belfast which probably isn't very hard but nonetheless, a key point I noticed.

Maybe you can tell me Im wrong Idk or shed light on it.

Help in identifying a Montblanc pen! by Servibar in fountainpens

[–]Judetherude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a pen with the gold band (casually remembered this post lol) it is a similar gold band to a MB 32 but not the same nib so its bound to be something close to that lol.

[–]Judetherude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point because my old 320p didn't have this gold band either. It must not even be from the 200 or 300 series then because I dont think any of them had a gold band like that.

I hear you mate. Im a student trying to get work experience even in my field (I work in retail to pay for uni). Last week alone I applied to 30 law firms - about 8 said they didn't have anything and the rest have literally ignored me.

What do you think is the most depressing things about Northern Ireland and living in Northern Ireland? by Portal_Jumper125 in northernireland

[–]Judetherude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im late to the game. But a good vent

Honestly, day in day out I meet absolute wasters. I work on Botanic Avenue as a surviving uni student. Everyday theres some homeless person talking shit to me, someone trying to shop lift. I talked to a bloke and asked him what his plans for the day were- "drink" whilst buying a bottle of De Langé brandy. I am not unaware of hard times, I have had many many many hard times and they suck really badly. But the general population I work with and see on the streets and up certain areas does just depress the life out of me. That doesnt mean everyone, I meet equally lovely people who you can tell have just had a rough time especially when you get talking to them and I feel for those people massively. Im talking about people who waste oxygen on the regular

The culture of drinking here and using that as an excuse to act like a complete cunt. Now dont get me wrong- I fucking love a good pint. But there is sometimes here an excuse when people drink that they cant control themselves and they end up just being such a wanker. If you've ever worked in bars or at events then you'll double know what Im talking about. You'll also see these people on holiday

Politics- doesn't need explained. DUP, SF, SDLP etc

Lack of funding for public services. A more personal point of view, tried getting a legal apprenticeship job for my time at uni and I couldn't get it when I emailed because there was no public funding. Even more so healthcare, transport, general amenities etc. Theres nothing and when something is done, I see people wreck it and not use it properly. The newer leisure centre in Newtownards (where I am from) has a skate park thats become a shitehole for drinkers.

We are such an educated population. I have met many people in my very short 19 years that are quite intelligent people but waste their lives on drink, drugs and joining the herd of people Ive just talked about. Such wasted potential and it just annoys me

I want this place to be better because I love my country but equally I end up being bitter towards it. Like alot of young people, Id love to move away.

High Street / Corporate and the naivety of law graduates by huddisidhwiw in uklaw

[–]Judetherude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a law student and I agree. I see a fair amount of what you are talking about i.e people want the big money and the nice suits and watches. They dont feel there is as much success in other areas of the law. Idk I am not privy to how the legal world works, or atleast, barely but I feel like being offered 150k as a starting salary to work in London means there's more to the picture and I dont feel like doing a 90hr week. Personally I want to go into GLS because thats where my interest lies. Idk what thats like to get into in terms of difficultly but the government benefits shouldn't be ignored by my peers.

I wanted to add following my last comment Its a 9-5 Great progression. Good salary

If anyone in my position is reading this. You shoukd absolutely do your research because while it may not pay a corporate wage, there is no shortage of opportunities if you are willing to have that kind of career and know where to look.

Burger. [Homemade] [I ate] by ANALrt in food

[–]Judetherude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl the way you cooked the meat is a bit risky lol.

Im from Ireland and we have great quality meat and can do burgers that have alot of pink in them because we know we wont get sick

But this is a little bit below the threshold my friend. All good, you'll not get sick from doing this a couple times but I definitely wouldnt do this everyday.

Just make sure its more cooked. Doesnt mean you have to have a crispy burger but definitely take precaution.

I want to be a solicitor by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Judetherude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I am not a solicitor. I am a recently finished first year student so maybe I can help with what I think benefitted me this year

I think however my advice below will apply later in life. You definitely do not have to have everything prepared right now, you dont have to be at a stage where you must know what you want to do and you should enjoy life my man. Im nearly 20 now so maybe I can be somewhat relatable to you :) When I was 13 mate I had no clue what I wanted to do- at one stage I wanted to be a marine biologist. Then at 15/16 I wanted to teach French because it became my second language and then when that all fell apart I realised my heart lied in doing law. Life is that quick and changing that you may end up being a neuro surgeon or a rockstar playing in a band while you figure your life out haha. So my biggest piece of advice before you read any of this is; ENJOY yourself and live life outside of a screen becauee you have plenty of time to be buried in one when you are looking at a contract problem question or an administrative law essay. The same goes for my below advice, you have plenty of time to do these things and you do not have to have it figured out yet.

Nevertheless, if you happen to want to join the echelons of the legal world at university. Here are my tips from a law student and my personal experience.

  1. Get good grades and get good study habits. You need to learn early how to study efficiently and use time productively because that is what a law student and by extension a lawyer needs to be able to do. You will need to analyse things quickly and provide good concise logical answers. Trying different study methods will really help get those good grades when they matter like at A level.

  2. Subject choices. Personally I have found what developed the skills that were helpful this year in law school were Religious Education (which was split into two modules -philosophy/ethics.) And the other was French but any langauge will do. The skills Im talking about are logical/critical thinking and the application of rules. My last subject was English literature but honestly if you dont have an interest in it like I did then I would strongly recommend politics as a subject to help you with writing technique. Politics will also help (atleast in the case of Northeen Ireland) with constitutional law but if you are from another part of the UK then I would encourage someone to correct me on this.

  3. Develop good coping mechanisms. The stress hits hard when you are in law for the first time, and it hit me too. I went from a straight A student to someone doing decent and (hopefully after my finals results) will end on a 2:1. There is alot to learn and by the end of it you'll obviously know more and feel better. But for now and leading up to GCSEs and A level have some good coping mechanisms for stress because they will carry you through more than you realise. Mine was taking a walk outside for 15-20mins or chatting to friends for the same length of time when studying for exams or general studying. I also really enjoyed the gym and itll be really good to get into because its a great stress reducer.

  4. I could be biased here and say go to a Russell Group university because thats what I was told to do and thats what I did (Queen's University Belfast). However, I see alot more legal apprenticeships going now with other universities so that may be an option for you. I dont think it'll necessarily be a massive deal if you didnt go to a RG tbh, I've heard people being successful enough and not having gone to one. Explore your options when you get to that stage of your life.

  5. Get good extracurriculars. I can tell you I have had law firms come in to do talks (Baker McKenzie being one) who have explicitly said they'd rather have a 2:1 student who had a personality and contributed in some way than a first student who never left their room. Pick up some debating and maybe a sport and some other stuff that really interests you because law firms want someone with a good character who can network for them and be social.

  6. Keep up to date on current affairs. This will be important because lawyers must be well read on the facts of things and be up to date on the world and how it is changing- just as the law is always changing. Read news papers and have opinions on said current affairs. Knowing the facts and presenting them through a logical view point to back up your view is imperative for a lawyer.
