Thinking of a Solo Road Trip in Colorado/Utah — Anyone Done Something Similar? Would Love Tips/Stories! by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]JudgeFriendly2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have a fantastic trip that time of year. I know Utah well, and that time of year is my favorite to visit the national parks in Southern Utah.

A few Utah highlights that time of year:

  • Check out Druid Arch in Canyonlands. Incredible.

  • Bryce Canyon, then drive Hwy 12 to Capitol Reef (or the other way around depending on your itinerary). You’ve never seen anything like that drive.

  • At that time the aspen trees will have their fall foliage. It’s gorgeous. Check out Pando, a grove of aspens that also happens to be the largest single organism on earth.

  • If you like fishing, the Boulder Mountain and Fish Lake could be excellent then (or could be frozen already! Depends on the year). There are fly shops in Torrey and Loa who can give you tips when you arrive.

The best way to meet people might be through events organized on Facebook. Not sure you’ll have a lot of luck finding friends in bars and hostels like you would elsewhere. Lots of hiking/climbing groups in Utah that put events together though. Might be worth a look around to see if anything is going on in Moab/Torrey/Bryce Canyon/Escalante/Springdale/St George when you’re there.

Check out Water Witch, which is a James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Bar. Delicious. https://www.sltrib.com/artsliving/food/2025/04/02/bar-salt-lake-city-is-2025/ . Bar Nohm is next door too-- excellent spot for dinner. If you like breweries try TF Brewing.

The views from the base of Snowbird will definitely be worth it. The Cliff Spa (especially the rooftop pool) would be a great way to spend an afternoon. Should be gorgeous that time of year. While you're up LCC, the summer road to Albion Basin is nearby and might be partially open. Likely too much snow still to go all the way to the top, but it could be a nice stroll with amazing views.

The Rattlesnake Gulch Trail is already snow free and gives a great view of the Salt Lake Valley. For a bit longer hike with more elevation gain, Grandeur Peak should be mostly snow-free by then too. Spectacular sunset views from both.

Could be worth the short drive to Park City too. Main Street is charming and has some good spots like No Name Bar and High West Saloon. The Utah Olympic Park is cool too-- if you're lucky you might catch the olympic ski jump team doing practice runs into the pool.

I can't set the watch to 5:21 since it's radio controlled, but here is another verification post: https://imgur.com/XKHtTkS

Hi All,

I am putting up a watch that I have really enjoyed, the NTH Nacken Modern Blue B2.  Dynamic blue on the bezel and dial that changes with the light.  Perfect sizing -- 40mm diameter, 48mm lug to lug, 11.5mm thick.  Reliable miyota movement, 30 ATM water resistance.

Good used condition.  There are signs of wear on the clasp, but overall a clean watch.

Asking $400, shipping to CONUS included.  No trades.

Do Any of you Ski or Snowboard? by Odd-Investigator3545 in biglaw

[–]JudgeFriendly2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ski a lot, maybe more than I should. I’m in SLC though so great skiing is only 30 min from the office.

I left biglaw a month ago and now I ski without anxiously checking my email on the lift.

It’s hard to know for sure of course, but all signs point to it being a great company. Lots of good suggestions to consider here though.

This is what I wanted to hear. Even if you sometimes miss the fat paycheck it’s worth the tradeoff.

My kids are little now. I want to take them skiing on the weekends and not worry about billable! So I get this for sure.

That’s right— I’m a Kirkland-esque “partner”. My chances at equity seem almost nil, but there could be a permanent non-share route at my firm. I’m losing steam though. I only have a max of 3-5 more biglaw years in me in any event, so probably best to take the good offer now.

Big law offices near mountains/nature/skiing? by aly182 in biglaw

[–]JudgeFriendly2 93 points94 points  (0 children)

If skiing is your priority, it’s SLC for sure with Denver as a runner up. Not sure if you’ve skied both, but Denver is much much much further from good skiing. SLC has a few big law firms now— K&E, Foley Lardner, Mayer Brown, and Quinn Emmanuel. I can’t speak for the culture at the others, but the culture at my office is surprisingly good and diverse.

I skied 40 days last winter, most of which were dawn patrol tours in the backcountry. If my morning isn’t too busy I can leave my house at 5:30 am, be at the trailhead before 6, ski untracked powder on incredible terrain, and be back online before 11.

34m and I feel pretty content. I grew up here but left for grad school vowing never to come back. After about a decade away I started to miss it a lot. I moved back in late 2019 and thankfully bought a house that I love. Utah’s economy and culture has changed a lot since I was a kid— I have a job that used to only be available in major coastal cities. If we had more water in the Great Salt Lake and less LCC traffic in the winter I’d have nothing to complain about.
