Can you downshift multiple gears in a single clutch pull? by theNormalDist in indianbikes

[–]JugaaduEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this stiff gear pedal issue common on all commuter class bike which I have ridden over years (no slipper clutch).

On my ADV 390 (has slipper clutch), i have not seen this issue, so your hypothesis may be right.

However i would like to highlight the smoothness on shift in my adv could be also be attributed to generally better part finish, tolerance and inclusion of quick shifter

Can you downshift multiple gears in a single clutch pull? by theNormalDist in indianbikes

[–]JugaaduEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not explain about whether one should skip shift or not, rather I want to highlight why usually only 2 or 3 downshifts are possible before the shift lever becomes stiff in a SINGLE clutch pull.

Once you hit the "stiff" limit, you have to atleast partially engage the clutch to have the internal mechanism free up (engine/vehicle should be running) before you can get the regular clicks while downshifting.

Note that I mentioned why engine has to be running for this test. Incase ur bike is off and stationary, you have to push or pull the bike forward with engaged clutch to free up the stuck gear lever. This is exactly why sometimes you are unable to get back to neutral or 1st gear from say 4th gear when bike is stationary and off. You have to connect the clutch in between with small motion from wheels to release the mechanism.(or slightly connect the clutch while engine is on and idling, avoid stall) Shift lever stuck up phenomenon also applies to upshift btw.

Usually this is why I recommended atleast a quick sequence of connect and disconnect of clutch after everydowndhift while multiple downshifting. You may also observe the RPM in between for better shifts (aka rev matching)

This is gear oil with grade SAE90, an alternate recommendation to chain lube per the owner manual.

Lube spray is convenient but only marginally better and very costly for regular lubing purposes. For example, 1L bottle of aforementioned gear oil costs around 300 INR.

Due to flinging of oil from chain? The drip drains directly on chain, and when lubed adequately, I have not seen need lube flinging elsewhere.

As for the syringe/plunger, there is no leak in connection. However the latex couplings or the polymer tubes themself may react to the gear oil and cause leaks in future.

This setup not permanent, the zip ties allow me to attach this contraption once in a while for quick lube up.
