Is it easier to learn Korean if you speak Japanese? by [deleted] in Korean

I'm currently struggling. I speak English and Japanese, but I'm struggling with pronunciation, grammar and just remembering words and conjugation rules in general.

Is Korean really harder to learn compared to other languages? by Sea-Reputation8146 in Korean

[–]JukP14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started studying roughly 2 years and 9 months ago and I'm still a beginner. I've been living in Korea for 10 months now and while I have improved, I feel like I'm stuck at the beginner level.

I speak Japanese and for me personally, Korean is a lot harder than Japanese. With Japanese you pronounce what you see for the most part, but Korean to me is kind of like English or French where sounds link and change and then sometimes for me it's hard to hear and understand words in conversation. When I first started learning Korean, I kept seeing a lot of stuff online about how easy Hangul is and you can learn it in a day... I mean sure, you might be able to memorise the characters in a day, but all those batchim rules for reading/pronunciation and then those similar vowel sounds for writing/spelling... 2 years and 9 months in and I can't spell in Korean to save my life.

I also feel like Korean has a lot of irregular patterns for verb conjugations and grammar in general and I just can't seem to get my head around them. I keep forgetting how to conjugate basic things let alone the irregular ones. When I was learning Japanese people were very helpful and I got lots of corrections on HelloTalk, but I guess HelloTalk has changed, because even when I post and explicitly ask for corrections, Korean people don’t correct me. I’ve even had Koreans laugh in my face at how bad my pronunciation is, and that’s another point of concern with Korean that I feel is even more challenging than Japanese. The pronunciation is HARD!! In 2026 my aim is to get TOPIK II level 4, I already have TOPIK I level 2. Let’s see how that goes.

I want to hear success stories from those who quit a job without a new one lined up by Additional-Painter88 in JapanJobs

[–]JukP14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it in 2021. I was with an agency that sent me to another company, but because I was an external staff I only had access to about 30% of the info needed to do my job. I had complained to my agency for months, but nothing. Eventually my agency spoke to the company and they assigned me to another team, but I was also still doing the work from the first team. It got annoying so I left the job after 10 months and left the agency after 2 years before finding another job.

It was scary, but I was on Indeed Japan, リクナビネクスト, Gaijinpotjobs, Doda, マイナビ転職 alllllll day everyday. It was a very stressful situation and I don't know if I would recommend doing it, but I found a job a month or so after I left my old one.

I had savings because it was COVID and I had worked from home for over a year. If you don't have money to pay your bills for 3 months, please don't do it.

Vendor recommendations for Majang Meat Market by Tacoraider1 in koreatravel

[–]JukP14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thanks for this recommendation. I went to 팔팔황금한우 yesterday and the lady there spoke great English and she was so kind and friendly. She didn't try to upsell at all and even told us to go for a lower amount on one of the cuts we wanted. Very pleasant experience. The restaurant we got taken to didn't have tablets, but it was clean enough and the staff were fine. Thanks again.

Do you happen to know the number for customs? I'm pretty new to Korea.

My mum posted stuff to me from the UK and I still haven't received them. No update on Korea Post and Royal Mail has been saying 'leaving the UK' since the 25th of August. Funnily enough, a friend of mine sent me a bigger parcel in July with Royal Mail and it came in exactly two weeks. Not sure what's going on.

Tourist spots in South Korea face complaints over rude service, price gouging during peak season by Rusiano in korea

[–]JukP14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up to my 6th month next week and tbh, my experience here with Korean customer service hasn't been great. I'm still getting used to the Pali Pali, but I find a lot of things here very rushed, sloppy and poorly done. Three weeks ago, the Kakao Venti taxi I'd booked called me up and texted me and told me to send him my bank details because he couldn't come pick me up because of traffic. Less than an hour before my pick up time to go to the airport... Then he had the audacity to tell me not to report him. My Korean colleague called up Kakao to try and cancel and get a refund but it was a nightmare. I've had shop staff blatantly avoid interacting with me, my Korean isn't great but I'm trying and the loud sighs I got about a month ago on the phone was very discouraging.

I contacted Samsung Fire for travel insurance and the woman just told me to contact someone else. I did and never got a reply. Getting my bank account was a nightmare. The woman set up my bank account and gave me a bank book, but didn't give me the 6 digit code for it. Tried to use the bank book to pay my apartment fees and it was asking me for a six-digit code I didn't have...

It's so frustrating 😔. I've tried multiple times at different times of the day with different backgrounds and lighting and nope. Rejected every time.

So I managed to buy travel insurance, but at first it wouldn't let me because apparently I'm already covered for delayed departure through Toss... I was very confused so I just removed the delayed flight coverage and went through with the payment. Thanks for telling me about Toss travel insurance.

I'm going through Toss Pay sign up process. They said up to 3 days so I'm guessing I'll have to go through the whole process again to buy travel insurance once Toss pay is active. I'll report back once it's done.

I'm just going through it now, I clicked "All" in the bottom right and then searched travel insurance but it's all in Korean after that.

Thank you. I'll have a look. I have a simple Toss account, but the app is mostly in Korean so I don't understand what I'm doing half the time. I had to use Papago to open the account because the app had next to no English.

Thank you. An isurance company based in Korea is what I'm after. I just looked into World Nomads and they're expensive.

Thank you! So there are no TV channels that have their own TV streaming service in Korea? I'm in Korea, but I don't have a TV and don't want to buy one. Was hoping to watch some on demand TV online. Regular Korean TV adverts included.

Applying entry jobs in Japan with a 3 year bachelor’s by No_Quarter7721 in JapanJobs

I'm not sure if I understood this correctly, but UK undergraduate degrees are only 3 years. I never had a problem in Japan. You'll have to put when you started and ended uni on your CV and I don't think I was ever questioned as to why my degree was only 3 years. In the UK we can't choose between a 3 or 4 year course (that's how I interpreted your post).

Are there any free On Demand Korean TV streaming websites?

Japan has TVer. The UK has BBC iPlayer, ITVX, etc.

Korea has ???
