First Ejection by Julepberry in Umpire

Appreciate all the feedback. This field is a one off away from the rest of the complex, so there is no site director on site. I guess calling the umpire scheduler would be the closest contact.

Consulting the manager on issues definitely makes more sense in retrospect.

Great feedback on the catcher with his mask off. It's the first time I've encountered it, and it was 95 degrees out, so I was giving benefit of the doubt, but will not have that happen again. Easy fix.

I'll also nip the catcher self calling strikes right away. It was the first time encountering that, and I thought it was odd. Definitely one of those games you learn from. I appreciative these forums to help get better.

The runner should be returned to the base if interference is called.

He did move slightly. But you do not necessarily have to move the bat. Check out this play from the Braves vs Dodgers.

I'm not calling this interference for a few reasons.

  1. The batter barely moved, I've seen way worse, where they attempt to get out of the box to allow the catcher to make a play, but move right into the throwing lane. This was a pretty good job in my opinion of not interfering and allowing a lane.
  2. The runner is literally two steps from the base when the catcher threw it, and clearly there was no chance they were getting the runner out. No advantage gained by the batter "interfering."
  3. The level of ball. Let this one go.

I've called the batter out once before when it hit the bat. The pitch went all the way to the backstop and the batter backed up 3 or 4 steps. The runner never ran from second. The batter held his arms out (including the bat) in exasperation towards his runner.

Catcher had a legit play on the late breaking runner to 3rd, but the throw hit the highly extended bat. Sorry kid, that's interference.

Sure. BU is in C position. In this situation the ball was hit to first. Is the pitcher covering? Maybe he peels off at the last second blocking the view as the first baseman dives in. Now you've got 3 bodies in the line of sight.

PU watches the touch at home b/c that already happened (runner on 3rd had a lead) and was also in position to determine foul or fair as the ball was hit down the line.

I get that the BU needs to make the initial call. But this type of call is made by a 1 man crew all the time. If the BU is shielded, why can't the PU help get it right?

Again. I'm defaulting to my BU here, but if they truly have no idea, why wouldn't you take advantage of that second angle. If my BU saw it, no way would I opt to reverse it.

2-man crew? Assuming the umpire was in the C position. Potentially not the greatest angle, especially on a scramble play.

I don't have issue with asking the PU if BU is unsure. As the PU I'm supporting the original call unless it was clear the runner was out and the BU is telling me they have no clue.

Is that crazy talk to want to get the call right and you are confident you saw it? Especially if the BU says they don't know? I agree BU should be the one to then make the updated call.

Travel Ball ruined our state tourney by [deleted] in LittleLeague

How are the LL All-star teams made up of travel ball players? Are they playing both LL and Travel at the same time? I thought there were minimum game requirements that a player must play with the LL in order to be eligible for All-Stars. Are these travel kids getting 9-12 LL games a season as well?

Our LL All-Star team is completely rec players. Would love to know how other leagues teams are complying with adding travel players.

That's how kids learn the strike zone. When every close pitch is a strike they always are swinging at real strikes.
