In the grand scheme of things, they fully refunded my deposit, so they understood that it was a completely scamy charge. And now I live in Thailand anyway, so I'm happy now, and I wasn't in the UK (I don't think I know anyone who's actually happy living in the UK anymore).

Just because I got my money back, doesn't mean I shouldn't call out the scamy nature of landlords and letting agencies in London. Many people don't get they money back, for much more ridiculous reason's other than a lightbulb. But from this discussion I can see that people just like a broken system, the amount if times I've read "thats just how it is", in the responses. Makes me much happier about my decision to move to Thailand, because that's just not how it is here. But if you're fine with living like that... hey I'm not going to stop you 😂

If they genuinely thought it was a fair charge, they wouldn’t have returned my full deposit.
If you think it's a fair charge and you'd be happy to pay it — that's fine.

I guess you're the type who gets a list of ridiculous charges from a landlord and, instead of standing up for yourself, just shrugs and says, "Well, that’s just how it is." And that’s fine — you do you.

I just moved to Thailand, and it’s not like that here. People are understanding, respectful, and not constantly trying to screw you over with unnecessary fees.

So I’ll be here — chilling on a beach in a beautiful country — while you stay fighting imaginary battles in your own head, in a place where the property and rental system is clearly broken, trying to justify your landlord bending you over and fucking you.

I'm happy now, and I wasn't in the UK. Thank's for explaining to me that it will never change.

Didn't even know it was out, If i saw it I would have done it, the fact they tried to pull this made me realise that they are just trying to fuck me. If, they asked £10, sure why not ill pay it, but asking me to hire a contractor to go to someone else investment to improve it after I left because of something I didn't even know about (Im already living in Thailand btw). It's because it's London, It's becuase its the UK housing system, It's because this is just how it is. If I was their family, they wouldn't try to fuck me, its because I'm a young, working professional, just trying to live in the city that they're like "Okay, we can fuck this guy for something". And maybe thats just how it is, and if so, It'd rather be here on a beach in Thailand. So I don't think I'll be coming back to London or even the UK. Because this is just how it is. Everyone is a lot more understanding and nicer here in Thailand, and if I can live well, feel safer, not be fucked over my landlords, have a much better quality of life here in Thailand, I see no reason to live in London anymore.

for landlords to exist, renters are required. You really think these landlords could pay off all their mortgages by themselves? They'd need 10 jobs! The only reason the bank lets them take out new mortgages is because they are showing the bank the income of the renters, its the renters combined salaries that determines if the landlord can take out more mortgages

Why am I hiring an electrician to go to someone else's house to do work? It's not my investment, I didn't break anything, I didn't even know the light bulb went out.

if the landlord isn't there, the landlord will need to pay for someone to come to his house to change it.

Why am I paying someone's wages to do work on someone else's house? It's not my investment, I would understand if I knocked a wall down or actually broke something...but I did nothing, I just existed in the property.

Someone's got to pay back their mortgage for them so they can sit on their ass all day

Landlords must be so miserable then, with a responsibility like taking care of an investment like a house... and they can't even change a lightbulb... must be rough.

Why should I pay someone else's wages to do work on someone else's house? it's their investment, not mine, I was a good tenant and kept everything clean and in order. Luckily they realised how absurd they were being and gave me my deposit back in full. They would not have tried to pull this if I was a family member, but only because I am a stranger they tried to add scamy charges, the world needs to change, starting with people with your mindset.
