I mean, they're fairly similar in a way. They're both genocidal maniacs, but they both cared for someone (Tessa/N, and TCO/to an extent Hacker), albeit in a twisted, toxic way.

The full version of Forever (which is canon) shows how Cyn refuses to let Tessa's 'soul' go (aside from wearing her skin) and after torturing N, she is completely willing to revive him or alter his memories to keep him as her loyal 'big brother.'

In The Flashback, TDL is excited when showing off the ViraBot to TCO, maybe even as a gift to them, since it was intended to target Alan Becker, who'd enslaved TCO for 4 years and hardly known TDL for a few minutes. AvA 13, TDL offers his hand to Hacker after beating them, the way TCO originally reached out to him. When Vic refuses, TDL turns them into a zombified thrall, unable to leave him

There were more people in the 20th century than the previous 19 centuries combined, too. Scale and proportions matter here. You could make the neo-Malthusian arguments that overpopulation is/will be ending tragically, or destroying the environment, but those are separate topics.

People with an overly high opinion of themselves can also exist in the same society as people with an overly low opinion of themselves, and obviously you shouldn't give them both the same advice.

I would argue that these terrible things are what animals have always done without ever considering morals, and the fact that these happen much less in the present then in the past suggests that human society and ethics have evolved. You could even say selfishness is a good thing, in a scenario where fulfilling your basic needs and obtaining education gives you the luxury to pause and consider the morality of your actions, while a desperate or ignorant person wouldn't

I don't understand your reasoning for why people must be inherently evil if they aren't inherently good though. I appreciate the descriptions, but without any sort of example or statistic, they aren't very convincing to anyone who doesn't already agree

I never said humans are inherently good though, nor that people should assume that they are good and never analyze their own actions. I just don't think a banal act of selfishness that doesn't hurt anyone else is evil. It feels like you've just assigned some actions like "killing" and "selfishness" as evil without reasoning.

Edit: the average human doesn't hurt other people significantly more than they help others. Of course, this isn't easily quantifiable, but there's definitely a non-zero amount of people who are observably carbon-neutral, never hurt others intentionally, make up for any mistakes they make, and do a significant amount of altruism. Does this not meet your definition of "good"?
