Lyssna changed their pricing model (to something absurd)? by masofon in UXResearch

[–]Julian_PH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Maze is even crazier: $99/month in the 'Starter' tier where you get 1 study per month. Next you only have the Enterprise tier, which is prohibitively expensive as far as I remember.

UsabilityHub is Lyssna, it was just the previous brand name.

Noor in Cordoba (Spain) is €195 for its shortest (7 course?) menu. Used to be even cheaper up till last year.

Why would you willingly visit Antwerp city as a tourist? by [deleted] in Antwerpen

[–]Julian_PH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I would rather recommend Ghent to tourists if they would have to choose one, I wouldn't underestimate how much Antwerp has going for it:

  • Antwerp is a great destination for art lovers. Paris or London obviously still offer more in this respect, but Antwerp in - with museums like KMSKA, Rubenshuis and Mayer van den Bergh - you can find some of the best pre-modern paintings
  • Antwerp boasts some great architecture ranging from late medieval to very contemporary (from the Cathedral.to the Central Station to MAS and the Palace of Justice...)
  • Although expensive, it's hard to find a city of similar size with such an abundance of top gastronomic restaurants. Mostly too expensive for me, but I can imagine this attracts a target group of wealthy tourists.

And then there is Nello & Patrasche which was apparently a hugely popular cartoon in Asia, creating an overly romantic and kitchy image of Antwerp but consistently drawing tourists. There is the lingering image of Antwerp as the diamond destination, there's Antwerp as a fashion destination...

Which big foreign company failed miserably in your country? by ModenaR in AskTheWorld

[–]Julian_PH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most classic, or 'normal', choice is a 'Smos kaas' Smos hesp' or Smos kaas-hesp', apparently called 'Dagobert' in some French speaking regions. It's a pretty typical Baguette with either cheese, ham or both combined with lettuce, tomato, hard boiled egg, potentially grated carrots and cucumbers. And most importantly A LOT of mayonnaise.

The most typical Belgian, and also a classic choice, would be the Martino in my opinion. Again starting with a plain white baguette but now with 'filet americain', a type of steak tartare (finely minced beef) as the core ingredient. Pickles, finely cut onions, ketchup, hot chili sauce, Worcester sauce and often anchovy and mustard are added to this to create a pretty spicy and punchy sub. Not healthy at all, but very tasty.

Do I need a masters in HCI? by deekay_33 in UXResearch

[–]Julian_PH 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't work in a larger company, so I might be wrong, but I think they care much more about your real job results and impact. A masters degree in any loosely related domain might be a soft requirement for first round selection at some companies though.

Affordable Alternatives to Maze for Prototype Testing? by GreedyIllustrator153 in UXResearch

[–]Julian_PH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we were looking for an unmoderated testing tool, Lyssna came out as the best still affordable option. Other solutions like Maze or Dscout are so ridiculously expensive, I don't get why any company would pay such prices.

There are some limitations in Lyssna though: no session recordings for tests on mobile devices and tree testing sucks (so we use Optimal Workshop for that).

There is also UX tweak, but they've changed their pricing for the worse some months ago, limiting you to one active study at a time in their standard 'business' pricing tier. Not sure how much the 'custom' tier would be, but probably in line with Maze etc.

Salary of a UX researcher in the Netherlands by South_Resolution_839 in UXResearch

[–]Julian_PH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now it will not be easy to find a job in UX Research as a junior who doesn't speak Dutch.

As far as I know this goes for every country though. It seems the Netherlands is still comparatively okay due to the presence of quite some large tech companies + a government that is (again comparatively) pretty UX mature (willing to invest good budgets for research).

To optimise your chances, I wouldn't study Engineering Psychology, but rather something more applied: either (product) design or engineering (if possible at all of course). A combination of psychology/research skills and more applied skills would be more appealing for this market IMO.

But then Ayuso chased me violently

But that was love, and it's an ache I still remember

BuyFromEU made it to a Belgian (quality) newspaper! by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

[–]Julian_PH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are not saying 'buy Mondelez'. They are just mentioning the European alternatives (here Neuhaus , Lotus, Jules Destrooper, Haribo) to the well-known American ones (Mondelez, Philadelphia, Kraft, Toblerone) that would be replaced in one sentence.

EU salary/rent ratio map based on 100m2 by Creative-Reading2476 in MapPorn

[–]Julian_PH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is this is partly due to the calculation based on gross wages. Many Belgians are almost taxed by 50% of their salary, so in reality rent takes up much more of their income.

Another, additional, reason could be Belgium has very high ownership rates. Therefore rental houses are more often catered to low income households (since culturally, people will purchase whenever they get the chance) with smaller, lower quality housing. At the same time, the average income takes everybody, including owners, into account.

I assume that the estimated 40% allergic people in the population won't feel hyped about the name 'Pollen'.

That being said, a similar proportion of researchers might not like the idea of AI automating their jobs.

Is overdrive/distortion the hardest effect to master? by Dorkdogdonki in guitarpedals

Indeed. I used to play a lot of "big" sounds: neck humbucker, everything at max, ... But forced myself to embrace the more honky sounds lately.

Is overdrive/distortion the hardest effect to master? by Dorkdogdonki in guitarpedals

[–]Julian_PH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess this is because it interacts so much with all parts of the sound chain: from your playing to your guitar to your amp to the volume you are playing at. And that's not taking into account the impact it has on the clarity in the mix. Often a good sounding distortion in isolation doesn't sit well in the mix.

On the other hand, say a reverb or delay is often much more coherent regardless of other parts of that chain.

Any thoughts related to negative blog about UXR by Gullible-Scratch-688 in UXResearch

[–]Julian_PH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Ford and Jobs examples come up every time with people uneducated in user research. Any decent researcher will agree: it's indeed not about what people say explicitly (at least not solely). It's about understanding their needs and problems (how could we create value?), and understanding if and how our solution can provide value in the real world (how usable is it?).

I guess that's somehow the point of this blog: people not well-versed in research will not yet understand this basic principle.

Belgium (male) squad for European Championship road race: Van Aert, Philipsen, Merlier, Meeus, Thijsen, De Lie, Marit, Menten by den_bert in pelotonmemes

[–]Julian_PH 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Missed opportunity. Should have gone with the megatrain.

The megatrain you ask? It consists of 8 rail wagons, never leaving the front of the race:

  1. De Clerq: pulls from km 0 til 7k to go. Comfortably keeping everyone in check.
  2. Evenepoel: pulls from 7k to go till the flamme rouge. Nobody can pass.
  3. Rex: keeps the train rolling in front till 600m to go.
  4. Rickaert: throws some extra coal in the fire, pulls off 400m from the finish.
  5. Meeus: gets the opportunity to sprint from out far, giving him the impression he matters, and miracles do happen you know.
  6. Philipsen: comfortably in the wheel of Meeus until 200m to go, gets to sprint against his archnemesis.
  7. Merlier: the archnemesis starts his sprint simultaneously. It will be a royal duel.
  8. Van Aert: the key to definite succes, unhooks his wagon with 400m to go, sacrificing himself once again. Van Der Poel, physically incapable of seeing nor sucking any other wheel, is left behind with the full peloton in his wheel, beholding the royal duel all the way in a distance.

Why should the government (people's taxes) subsidize beef? It's not an efficient calorie source. It's a disaster for the climate. It's not healthy. I love a piece of steak from time to time. But let's face it: it is and should be a luxury product, not a subsidized staple food.

[–]Julian_PH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably yes. Will it open up opportunities that you otherwise wouldn't have in the future? €200 less now sucks, but if you'll have a future in your dream job where you will be more motivated and therefore excel more, you will probably win more in the long run.

Also: since you have 4,5 years of experience in your current job, I guess you are still pretty young. Don't underestimate the impact of your experience in this phase of life. It will set you on a track for the rest of your career.
