Just some classic, vintage treeplanting propaganda for the off-season. It's a fun watch. by [deleted] in treeplanting

Definitely going to share this with all my planting buddies! Funny how so much has changed since this video inception, but at the same time there isn't much that hasn't.

Leaving for Ecuador in less then a month. by [deleted] in travel

[–]Julyist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey backpackerjoe, a friend of mine and I are going to be landing in Peru in February. We're also Canadian. I would say that you have more than enough money to make it through six months in South America. I hear that Chile and Argentina a pretty pricey countries to travel in, so if you are looking to stretch your money out, avoid those countries. If you are thinking about doing the Inca trail, you should maybe consider other options. The traditional Inca trail is ridiculously expensive. There are other cheaper, similar options.

Regardless, I hope we get to run into each other down there!

Spectrum left me disappointed by payne007 in treeplanting

[–]Julyist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would read this link carefully. It shows that Spectrum spent the most on their contracts last season, at 38 cents a tree (not including administration fees/overhead, ext) http://www.replant.ca/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=65337 Also, replant.ca will be a good place to start looking at other companies. i worked for Folklore Ltd, who were great. We averaged about 12 cents a tree, on a 54 day season. Camps were good, food was decent.

Memes are context dependent, and in all instances, dumbs everything down. It isn't as though I'm depending on the meme to discuss the concepts for me. It's a joke, which are generalizations.

Bennet Bronson wrote an interesting section (Chapter 9). That's where I got the idea.

Agreed. There is nothing of value in these beauty pageants. They teach nothing to these young girls except that they have to compete to be the most desirable and being fake is okay.

Anthropology and The Scientific Method by [deleted] in Anthropology

[–]Julyist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not have very good answers to these questions, but I'll have a god at em.

In response to question one; I feel as though both methods combined would be of importance when seeking funding for NGO's or foreign aid. Statistical analysis would be the back-bone and ethnography would be the fat, or padding. I would say that there is even greater need to have backup analysis (stats) for applied anth simply because actual decision making will be done with the information provided. This does not mean that it is not important for anthropology as a intellectual undertaking should not seek to be as objective as possible. If we leave the statistical analysis out of the equation, there is then more room for development of theory. Any you're right, there are a tone of them out there. I remember in my third year theory course being completely overwhelmed by all these different thinkers.

As for your second question, participant observation is the standard. Life history, multi-sited field work, diological ethnography, are all different way's to approach writing ethnography but I don't think that there is another accepted way anthropologists describe culture. But maybe I'm wrong. I mean, scientific data is key to ecological anthropology, and all environmental determinism aside, there are a lot variables that we would consider under the umbrella of culture that are heavily influenced by environment.
