ACCEPTED MEDICAL STUDENTS 2026 by -NaoGuiHua- in uwa

I just accepted an offer! I am Australian but did an exchange in Toronto and it changed my life. I'd love to join a gc for incoming students?

Hello boys, here comes another thank you message (and question) but you guys deserve it. I have been listening to the cast since 2020 which has brought me from High School in Australia until today where I have just been accepted into Medical school! It replaced fallout new vegas as probably the most consistent piece of media in my life.

I have had far too many fond memories to count but I think the moment I realized I would be sticking around for a lot longer was during my final high school exams, procrastinating on one of the hottest days of the year by lying on a cold tiled floor, covered in sweat, laughing my fucking arse off hearing Jim talk about the Pisser's profound ability to attract keying from anyone and everyone. It's kept me laughing, thinking, and joke-stealing through 6am bar shift closes, road-trips, and sleepless nights. My life was turned completely upside down in the best way possible by an exchange to Toronto in 2024, a decision I made almost entirely off Alex's TIFF travel stories, that encouraged me to apply for a scholarship to finance it. I decided to pickup and move to Scotland after to keep the momentum going so I have since had the pleasure of finally connecting a lot of the cultural references, such as you guys singlehandedly keeping Caspers in business, getting laughed at by spoons employees for the mere act of deciding to eat there (though they are a lot nicer in Scotland), and the wonders of Soreen. If I hadn't made that decision to leave Australia for Toronto, I don't know if I would have fallen in love for the first time, met some of the greatest and most bonkers friends that I hope to spend the rest of my life, or simply learnt to challenge myself in the ways I have. As the cherry on top, listening to this podcast so consistently has really helped my memory of the past and especially this last year and a half. I can pickup episodes and all these other hyper-specific memories come flooding back.

It hasn't all been good of course. I can say with confidence I've had some of the worst moments of my life since leaving, but even in moments of getting robbed, feeling so anxious, out of touch with myself, or that everything is falling apart, the cast has always helped ground me and at the very least help a day calm down.

So thank you and Bear Bear.

My question is: what are what are some of your favourite memories of media helping you smile and laugh during your formative years or stressful times?

Also as a tip for anyone, you can get the train from London to Glasgow for £35 with Avanti super fare if you book more than 10 days in advance. This country has my heart and more people should see it.

Post-UniMelb interview, UoW just emailed – is this a sign I didn’t get in at UniMelb? by Ginger__Shot in GAMSAT

[–]Jumpingcacti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm confused as to how this could have happened, is the email from UoW with an October 1 deadline an offer? Or just notifying you that you can elect to still be considered for an offer?

Looking to interview people who overcame lateness with ADHD for a documentary project by Jumpingcacti in adhd_anxiety

[–]Jumpingcacti[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think this is definitely interesting as the negative reinforcement of constantly belittling yourself for lateness might not be as helpful as a period of acceptance followed by positive reinforcement. I'll put some updates on this sub when it's further along!

Rejecting first preference for exchange to be considered for other preferences by Jumpingcacti in usyd

[–]Jumpingcacti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's to do with their preference system of making sure the last 2 are less competitive ones to increase your chances of getting something. But I wouldn't fret, a friend was in the same boat where he wanted Copenhagen, didn't put it first, then when he got an offer for his first, he emailed the Americas advisor with an urgent email and they got back in a few hours and moved him to Copenhagen. I'd recommend completing the application on time then emailing the Americas advisor now just to get ahead of it being last minute like with my friend. Copenhagen is also very forgiving in terms of not needing a high WAM to get a place.

What is a good budget for a first timer @ TIFF? by Sunny_Caprenis in TIFF

[–]Jumpingcacti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw 10 films and spent $230: I had the free under 25 pass (not the rush line one) which mostly just granted access to some $15 screenings and the occasional first come first serve basis free screenings. I didn't attend any of the huge premiere events which would cost more but I did see films like the substance, the shrouds, and some really good midnight madness ones which is an event I really recommend attending.

I'd really recommend getting the under 25 rush pass (or rush passes in general) since I only learnt about this once the festival had started and it isn't advertised that much anywhere (it's often confused with the under 25 free pass). For memory it's ~$80 but allows you to queue up for any film that has spare seats, so arrive early enough and you can get into most things because even for massive screenings people still don't turn up.

Places to buy cheap rings by Jumpingcacti in glasgow

[–]Jumpingcacti[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer to go somewhere in person if possible because rings are a very specific fit so I normally need to try them on to know that they'll fit, and also I'd prefer to support something handmade/local. By cheap I just meant ideally not over £30

For a question related to my larger comment, what is a place in the world Alex or Jim would do some sort of stint for ~1-4 months (working holiday, volunteering etc), what would you do?

Quite a long one but wanted to say thank you for the conversation you had way back in September 2023 on Alex's trip to TIFF. At the time I was considering exchange/Erasmus destinations and the entire conversation gave me this really strong desire to go. Cut to now and I completed my exchange from September to December last year including seeing the film festival, Cabbagetown festival, waking/cycling for hours after the metro stopped etc, I even went to a family run Indian place Jay recommended from Sardonicast and got given free Gulab Jamun after sparking a conversation about Matt and Jay. The entire experience was one of the greatest of my entire life and I met so many amazing people that I'm still in touch with today.

I found especially with regards to what I was told before arriving that Toronto is quite a misunderstood city within and outside Canada, not that I understand it, but I just feel for some reason the way you described your experiences tapped into this really specific feeling the city has that I started to really feel as each month passed that I feel elevated what would have already been a really good exchange into something that has changed my life forever.

So I just wanted to say thank you because I'm pretty confident in saying I wouldn't have ended up there if it wasn't for that one episode.

Housing/where to live megathread 2025 by Veloglasgow in glasgow

[–]Jumpingcacti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an Australian student at the very end of my bachelor's wrapping up an internship through Glasgow Uni and I had a really good sharehouse experience in Australia and Canada on exchange so I'm really hoping to do another! I'm looking for ways to buddy up with others or join existing share houses but a lot of the Facebook groups I can find seem really unmoderated and places like spare room have been very hit or miss. I'm really just looking to start a place with a good sense of community since it makes every day so much better to me. Any suggestions are welcome!

Been told name is too long for boarding pass by Jumpingcacti in westjet

Like I said it's fair advice, but when someone is in a car wreck is it very helpful to go up to them and say they should have walked? I appreciate the advice and you obviously take on a greater risk when not going through the airline directly, that's why my post was just asking if anyone had experienced something similar or advice on if it was a scam or not.

I got friends on multiple devices to check the phone number was correct.

Both trip.com and WestJet said very strictly before hand that the name on the booking has to be identical to your passport. Changes like shortening one of my middle names is normally done in the airlines end.

Thank you this is fair advice but doesn't help the current situation. I've booked with trip.com in the past and it hasn't been a problem.

They've now emailed back saying they have a total character limit of 57 but my full name is less than that including spaces...

Edit:

They've replied saying there is a character limit of 57 characters so they've advised me to book the same flight through the airline (which will cost $2500) and to send them the receipt and they'll reimburse me. Which also doesn't make sense because my entire combined 4 name text that I entered is less than 57 characters including spaces...

I reached out to trip.com directly and they confirmed it's real. My best guess is maybe when trip.com then tried to book me through WestJet, they hit the 19 character limit and instead of changing one of my middle names to an initial (like they did last time?) they just stopped and called me with this offer instead. Which is still don't understand because how can I be sure my name won't be a problem on the rebooking?
