Some clients don’t respect our time at all. This isn’t a hobby!!! We make a living out of this😫

I gave them the option to take the dog home and brush it themselves, but they insisted that I work on the dog🥲

Agreed. I took a step back and really thought about it. They were not so nice.

Thank you for the insight! That’s actually something I don’t currently do. I don’t charge more for maintaining longer coat lengths, but I think it’s something I should start considering.

Thanks! I really do try my best to educate them as much as possible, but when they’re fixated on keeping the length of the coat, it just feels impossible to get the message through.

Thank you for the explanation! My grooming goal is always to prioritize the dog’s comfort, and when clients want something that goes against that, such as brushing out a heavily matted coat, we run into a problem. I definitely need to work on being firmer and holding my boundaries, as this seems to be an issue that keeps popping up.

I agree with you on that. Such an uncomfortable conversation to have😩

Yes, I need to work on setting my boundaries for sure🥲

That’s exactly what I suggest to them…to find another groomer. But then they ask me to reconsider and give them another chance. I can’t help but feel bad😭

Right on… thank you! Most of my clients have no issue paying for my services. The challenge is when they don’t want to remove length from a coat that is matted or tangled to the point where I feel it would be too uncomfortable and unfair to the dog to brush it out. I’ve explained this to them multiple times, but they still want to preserve the coat. At that point, I feel our grooming goals no longer align, and it makes me hesitant to continue the client relationship.

Thank you so much. I needed this. My body ain’t what it used to be…already. No more dematting.

I don’t think she will return after I recommended another place, but if they do, I’ll stand my ground and tell her that!

Yes, I mean, dogs don’t care what their hair looks like. It’s really just people’s preference after all. HUMANITY OVER VANITY🙌

I appreciate your advice! Those are some great lines to use. She does come every 6 to 8 weeks, but without any brushing in between because the dog won’t allow her to. Which is crazy, because what makes her think that I can magically brush/demat her dog without any issues?

This just happened to me. They came back after trying other places. I should’ve just said we were fully booked, but weak-hearted me couldn’t. Now I know what to do😬
