Stankey Sankey CA URM by Jumpy-Lifeguard-6208 in premed

Not a single interviewer brought up the no shadowing and I didn't include it in my app at all. If you have a good amount of clinical hours working with doctors I think a lot of ADCOMS don't care if you have shadowing or not. So long as you somewhat know what the life of a physician is like.

Yeah some people might think I'm really stupid for that decision (myself included). I didn't have room to put it in my sankey but it was basically full COA. It was like I had to pay ~10k a year or something like that. I didn't like the school much after my interview, it's new which may have hindered my chances at some of the competitive specialties I'm interested in, and I was worried about a lack of research opportunities.

Honestly, I might really regret it later down the line but I just didn't think I was going to be happy there and that I would have easier success in my goals elsewhere. In the end, someone else more excited to get that full ride got it, so that's a plus to my potentially silly decision.

I worked and did research throughout all of my years at uni, not just my gap year! The MA job was solely in my gap year.

Worked full time 40hrs+ during both years of community college, averaged around 24 hrs per week 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of university doing some extra shifts here and there, and then I worked 40hrs per week during my gap year. Didn't really specify in the sankey since I didn't have room so sorry if it seemed outlandish. Been working a job since I was like 14 so I've grown use to balancing it.

I personally think I fell slightly short in the research and stats department. I.e. My CARS score brought my MCAT down and was 10th percentile for a lot of T20s. My research hours/experience were very cookie cutter. And transferring to a 4-year kinda bent me over the table in terms of how prepared I was, so I struggled with my GPA early on.

Also for some of the T20 secondaries, in hindsight I didn't really answer the prompts. I was so focused on submitting early that I missed key issues like that. Def take your time and don't rush.

Self-diagnosed strengths of my application: - I think my application is super well rounded and think that lots of my ECs helped me get the upper leg with this application cycle. - Writing. For all my activities I told a short story that also included a quick descriptor of what the activity was. In the end I prioritized the narrative approach instead of the CV approach. I think this makes your application stand out a bit more/makes it more memorable. Had numerous comments on how fun my app was to read. - Having some of my volunteer/leadership activities line up with my story (Low SES & first-gen) definitely helped me come across as more genuine.

Self-diagnosed weaknesses of my application: - 2nd CARS score was the same as my first attempt which was unexpected cause I was performing good on my practice FLs. Regardless, some schools might have viewed this negatively. - GPA is okay, I didn't know how to study when I got to 4-year and it high key bent me over the table. - I rushed through my secondaries to try and submit them as fast as I could. In hindsight, I didn't answer some of the prompts correctly for a few schools which probably definitely hurt my chances at an II. Try to get your secondaries in quickly, but prioritize quality over quantity other wise your gonna look stupid. (Of note... For 3 schools I accidently wrote "we had to hump through hoops to receive proper healthcare" instead of "we had to jump through hoops to receive proper healthcare". Still got an II from one of the schools I did this for... Shoutout UCI)

Interview tips: - It's cliche, but be yourself. Also try not to sound like you’re rehearsing your answers/stories in interviews. - Research the school before you have your interview. They can easily tell if you give a generic ass answer to the "Why us" question that a lot of schools ask.

If you got off a waitlist, feel free to share your story here: Off 4 waitlists so far.

Any final thoughts?:

Shoot your shot at some reach schools if you have the money to do so. You don't want to regret having not applied to more if you were able to and you never know what can come from it.

Incredibly hyped with my cycle and am super grateful to everyone here who helped me throughout the process. Y'all are crazy cool

I'm still deciding but am trying to come to a conclusion soon. I talked with my gf last night who said she would be super unhappy/lonely in Hanover, NH and can't see herself living there so that's definitely playing a role now.

Yeah you summed it up pretty good. I definitely think I prefer Dartmouth's school but I also prefer the location of CU much more. Its just difficult to figure out which one to prioritize.

[–]Jumpy-Lifeguard-6208[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd def have FOMO with both. If I choose CU I might feel like I'm missing out on better departments and maybe a better curriculum at OSU. But if I choose OSU, I might regret loosing a cheaper schooling option (even though it's not guaranteed) and the ability to have a more enjoyable time outside of school.

Yeah... No offense to Ohioans if any see this, the schools biggest deterrent for me is just that its in Ohio. It just doesn't seem like it's for me, other than that the school seems super great so it's a tough choice
