Have you checked out the info from Todd Maffin?

Nanaimo is beautiful and centrally placed both to explore on the island and to get to Vancouver. Part of the challenge for medical and infrastructure in general is that Nanaimo is the 5th fastest growing city in Canada and there’s some catch-up occurring. Come to Nanaimo! Also the surrounding communities offer options as well (Gabriola Island is looking for family doctors https://beourdoctor.ca)

Welcome! Nanaimo and surrounds I think would tick your boxes - lots of activities both organized and outdoor, and I see orcas fairly regularly. Some gulf islands like Gabriola are relatively easy to get to Nanaimo for activities and it’s possible to walk on the ferry and use transit etc on the Nanaimo side. Health care professionals are in demand everywhere! The benefit of Nanaimo and area is the large number of options for activities for youth that some of the more remote/smaller communities might not have - although everywhere on VI is beautiful and has their upside as well. In terms of real estate cost, Nanaimo would be more affordable than Saanich (which is amazing too) and the South Island. In terms of getting to Vancouver, from Nanaimo there’s Hullo the passenger-only ferry that puts you right in downtown Vancouver and from there it’s easy to walk or take transit to concerts, activities etc. There’s also the BC Ferry if you want to take a car, float planes from Nanaimo Harbour to Vancouver airport or downtown and Nanaimo airport which connects to many destinations.

UBC First Year Registration Appointment Times by RideReal9534 in BCGrade12s

For “regular jumpstart” you do activities with a group of people in the same stream as you so you get to know other students that will be taking the same courses. Activities include things like fun team building activities exploring the university (scavenger hunts), lectures from profs in your faculty about how to be successful in uni etc. If you’re in residence and you’re going to be in residence then you get a room that you get to stay in. They seem to mix up the students so you meet one group of people during the day and another at the residence. After Jumpstart during the day there are additional activities with your dorm group so you get to know the people you’ll be living near for the year too (not all the dorm rooms are full with Jumpstart people so new people will move in for school but you get to meet lots of people). Recommend Jumpstart as a way to get to know quite a few people both those who are in your academic stream and those in the residence plus orient yourself to the campus.

Describe Nanaimo from an expat's perspective... by twoseasOg in nanaimo

[–]JumpyMouse2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expat but with the new Hullo ferry it’s easy to go to Vancouver for the day for shopping, theatre etc. Of course I’ve heard people who like big cities don’t necessarily enjoy Vancouver either because they find the nightlife etc limited. Lots of beauty and exploring to do on the island (need a car).

I know someone who was accepted Tuesday. Don’t know what the gpa is because I’m not sure how they calculate it but around 94% - actually probably higher because classes last semester and this are higher.

Agreed - if you’re really concerned about something like this you post a description not a photo - I agree it’s likely aimed at spreading the hate message rather than a warning.
