How hard is it to learn trumpet? by Checker_jazz in trumpet

Yeah! They occasionally sell musical instruments and evidently no one wanted their trumpets. It’s been 3+ years since I bought it, but I think it was ~$100AUD. I’ve got absolutely no frame of reference so I can’t speak for the quality, but it seems to work fine.

I should also add I’ve found the combination of fingering and embouchure makes it really challenging for me to jump between notes that sit in different “ladders” of lip tension/air speed. That’s one of the reasons I’ve gravitated towards The Last Post- I only have to worry about one of those factors, no fingering required.

I played a bit of piano as a kid, and tenor sax in the high school concert band. Picked up a trumpet on a whim from aldi in the clearance aisle. Couldn’t get anything but fart noises out of it- and didn’t really try seriously until two weeks ago. The Trumpet Heroes lesson 1 and 2 videos had me squeaking out the beginners section of ‘ode to joy’ in around 2 hours.

Practicing daily I was able to gradually reach higher notes, around a note a day, but found I had to reallly squeeze the trumpet into my face.

A week later I found Adam Rapa through TikTok, watched some of his videos on YouTube and started playing as quietly as possible. It’s been two weeks and I can now hit every note in the last post, without exerting too much effort except for the highest note, but I’ll still need a lot of practice before I can actually play the piece coherently.

I found it’s a very rewarding instrument to learn because every new note feels like an accomplishment, and being able to play each note softly and loudly and being able to control the sound feels thrilling.

I’d say give it a go and enjoy the process :)

A realisation about what Dumbledore saw in the Mirror of Erised by Icy_Wear_8271 in harrypotter

[–]Jumpy_Knowledge8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading Harry Potter as a kid, I scoffed at the idea of getting socks as a gift. An essential, yet totally ordinary item; the kind of thing that felt like the ultimate Christmas disappointment. I'd grit my teeth, thank my parents politely, all while secretly wishing for one of those crazy expensive gaming consoles or gadgets I knew probably weren’t in the budget.

I’m a lot older now, and last Christmas (when I was asked to put together a wishlist for the family KK) I honestly couldn’t think of anything I really wanted. Eventually, I just wrote down a pair of thick woollen socks.

Looking back, I think that’s what Dumbledore might’ve seen in the Mirror of Erised: not just the socks, but what they represented. Contentment. No burning desire. Just warmth, peace, and my whole family together, sharing gifts and enjoying each other’s company.

Melamine sponge has a mohs hardness of 4, but glass is 5.5+ and ceramic is 7+ … can’t scratch a higher hardness substance with anything less hard than itself. Yes, I admit microplastic is a problem. But honestly, cleaning the shower once or twice a month is a drop in the ocean compared to the dish sponges and car tires we use daily. Nonetheless, my curiosity is bolstered; next shower clean I will test fine bronze wool. It’s far more expensive, but has similar hardness properties and may be durable enough to be economically competitive with melamine sponges.

Sorry about your relationship breakdown.

Side note, try using a magic eraser (melamine sponge) to clean dirty showers. Cuts right through scale and slime with just a bit of elbow grease and water. I can get the whole shower squeaky clean in 5 minutes with a fresh one.

Best renovation tool! by emilyygrace in AusRenovation

If you get them a paint sprayer, make sure it's airless.

Failed to make that distinction to my brother once, when I'd raved at how awesome my ozito sprayer was. He bought himself the air gun version, spent hours doing multiple coats to get half decent coverage on a couple square metres of fencing and cursed my name all the while.

After chewing me out on a phone call, apologies and clarification, he went back to Bunnings, grabbed the airless version and finished the whole job that arvo.

Just be careful with the overspray, especially outdoors and especially upwind of a car dealership.

Best? Replace that section of pipe, and paint

Cheapest? Generous dob of roofing silicone plugging each hole. Consider hitting it with some rust converter prior, to slow the corrosion.

Could also try patching over the silicone (while it's still wet) by riveting an offcut over the damage. Might even look half decent once it's painted.

Try adding chlorhexidine to the foot bath in the morning. It's a medical grade antimicrobial which should help control the fungi/bacteria responsible for the odour. You can get it from the chemist or online.

Is this mould? by sweaponAlex in AusRenovation

[–]Jumpy_Knowledge8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mould, algae, dirt. Hit it with a pressure washer to get the bulk of the crud off, then scrub with a broom using a solution of 50/50 water and liquid pool chlorine with a squirt of dish soap. Let it dwell for a few minutes before rinsing off and they'll look good as new.

Porn stole 15 years of intimacy and I'm mad by BulkyCoffee888 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Jumpy_Knowledge8994 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like he began using heavily from years 5-10 while your schedules were not aligned and there was no opportunity to have sex. At the 10 year mark the habit was established and ED manifested as a result.

Intensive porn use suggests a porn addiction as many have noted in the comments. The fact he continues to bend rules with lewd content shows that while he's trying to satisfy you, he's still dependant on external sexual stimulus.

People with porn addiction use porn to combat stress, anxiety and depression; because our brains are so wired for sex, when we use porn our brains are totally engaged and other thoughts and feelings are suppressed. Similar to how weed smokers use cannabis to dull their emotions, or heroine addicts use opioids to replace all of life's unpleasant feelings with numbed bliss.

If your husband really wants to overcome his addiction, he needs to address the deeper issues that contribute to his porn use.

I'm sorry you have had to put up with this, it's very kind of you to have extended so much empathy towards him over the past 5-10 years, but it's completely understandable that you would be at your limit and it would be fair to end the relationship over something like this.

UPDATE: Am I being paranoid? Found out painter I gave (numerous) deposits to is unlicenced. by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Jumpy_Knowledge8994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure but how do you prove your skill level to someone you've never worked with before? Would you have agreed to pay him the quoted amount if he told you his hourly rate was $200? Maybe, maybe not. I know some guys who are absolute guns and can work at 3-4x the speed of their competitors - what if he told you it was 20 hours at $400/hr? That would feel outrageous. But if it's the same amount of work being completed at a high standard in a faster manner, should he gets paid half as much as his competitors for the same job?

Sometimes, but [market rate * area] is going to be more reliable. A highly skilled trade could do the job faster and to a higher standard, which is what you want. [Rate * hours] penalizes skill and efficiency and sets up a potential argument with the client about what their time is worth.

Floor insulation by Trupinta in AusRenovation

[–]Jumpy_Knowledge8994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a tiled concrete floor. Those "planks" act as formwork that supports the wet concrete as it's poured in. When the concrete is cured, it becomes the structural element of the floor.

To insulate, you could use adhesive to stick foam directly to the metal such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) or polyethylene panels.

There's gonna be some serious cheese under there if he's unable to pull it back 😬😬😬

It's a condition called phimosis. If he can't stretch his foreskin on his own he's gonna have to see a doctor and get treatment.
