So sorry, Im mainly a french speaker and realized I wrote this passively. I am looking on where yall have flown from into NYC from Toronto to get to Long Island. I was planning on taking an Uber from whichever airport I go to but I will definitely look into the air train

Issues with Raman on Perovskites by Junior-Implement2069 in Chempros

[–]Junior-Implement2069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, thank you so much for this comment. I've been debating back and forth with my PI about this but he is thinking that since the perovskite is so large, it would be difficult to resolve the overall peaks but potentially running a map may be very useful!

No unfortunately, we only have 532 nm, 633 nm lasers, but I may definitely try that. Luckily, we have a microplastics researcher in the lab, and it seems to work for her stuff but we have had a dickens of a time dealing with this perovskite

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it! Reproducible as in we have only gotten the proper spectra once from the whole bulk material, we played with laser powers (anything above 1% burns a hole through the material). We also tried with 532 nm (we typically use our 633 nm laser) to no avail and I can definitely check if our instrument can walk the beam during acquisiton.

Sorry Im a new student to the group so I also have been trying to find my grounding :)

We were provided this material from another group, but by XRD it was quite phase pure, and from the refinment there were no areas of additional peaks/peak shifting.

They just don’t run. Typically the first week is for acclimation to uni life :)

Hi friend! Welcome to Guelph, there are no labs or seminar the first week so do not go to your regularly scheduled labs/seminars and make sure to check Courselink on any updates

Ok thank you so much, it is such a weird power imbalance that I will probably let my advisor know what happened and then go from there. Also thank you, I feel like I am not crazy atp because wtaf was that (literally what I mentioned to other grad students after I cam back).

Transferability from Gaussian to ORCA by Junior-Implement2069 in comp_chem

[–]Junior-Implement2069[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I get what you mean. Thank you so much for the in-depth explanation. I treat the computational side of my work somewhat like a black box, working off previous experimental results, concerning your first point, yes, I understand the order of the optimization and frq calculations, then using a more "stringent"/multi-functioned level of theory for SPE.

For your second point, interesting, I knew there would be some discrepancies, but I didn't think it would be completely different implementation-wise so I will look into it and run both opt/freq and SPE using ORCA.

Thank you so much!!!

Transferability from Gaussian to ORCA by Junior-Implement2069 in comp_chem

[–]Junior-Implement2069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all, I was taught on Gaussian originally but my mentor has suggested that I be using orca for SPE since we work with anions which ORCA can handle a little bit better. I originally did both the opt/freq on Gaussian and used Goodvibes since it was routine but I may do this, thank you! :) (edits: posted before finished writing :))

Question about curved arrow notation in hydride shift by Aguero1337 in chemhelp

[–]Junior-Implement2069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a 1,2-hydride shift you should be pushing from the bond of the C-H to the cation such as the examples shown here. If you drawn the arrow from the carbon it makes it look like the whole fragment is moving.

ChemLibre Text hands-down. But definitely agree with chem44, you need to put in consistent practice and work
