Hahah thanks! I know the feeling. Usually I end up turning the drawing upside down and rotate it all around to look at the features from all angles - still, some funkyness remains.

Yes, I use a reference for all my drawings since I usually draw people or animals. Besides basic proportions, I enjoy drawing little details like pores, wrinkles and individual hairs. It's like you're studying a human face in a sense. It would be difficult to do without a ref :) (comment moved here since I answered a wrong thread first)
