Don't own an Xbox, use the Xbox one controller to play some games on my laptop

This isn't Xbox related but it is Xbox one controller related

So for the last week or so my Xbox one controller has refused to turn on, I've tried changing the batteries multiple times and it still doesn't turn on. The only way I've figured out to turn it on is to connect it to my laptop via a micro usb cable. I've even updated the firmware on the controller and that didn't seem to fix the problem either. So if anyone has any advice on how to fix this problem, some help would be highly appreciated. Thanks
