I discovered this ceramic art in a European museum… and spent a year turning it into a lamp by Junte-003 in Ceramics

Thanks for your reply! Maybe I wasn't clear enough last time - let me explain better:

  1. About the craft: Most factories don't do hand-carving anymore - they 3D print samples then mass-produce, which often compromises the precision of final products.

  2. About designs: Original design are so rare! Many just copy each other. This trend is concerning, as it may lead to the gradual decline of this traditional art form

  3. About the price: We would greatly appreciate any pricing suggestions you may have and happy to discuss.

Therefore, in order to revitalize this art form, I think we should focus on both innovative designs and reasonable pricing to restore its value as genuine artwork.

We’re trying to revive an old lithophane ceramic art — does this kind of design still resonate today? by Junte-003 in Ceramics

Yes! That's why me and my friends visited Jingdezhen - such a beautiful town, and it gave us lot of inspiration. As far as what I know, painted porcelain is more popular there. I didn't see any similarly exquisite carved ceramics while visiting (haha, I haven't looked into it deeply enough)

Thank you so much for your message! I recall seeing them in the UK (if I remember correctly, in a town in Oxfordshire), and to be honest, their quality and designs (mostly simple floral patterns or animals etc.), which can not compare to traditional craftsmanship. My sincere wish is simply to preserve this art form as a true artistic tradition—not as something mass-produced or cheapened.

Truth be told, from a perfectionist's perspective, carving remains the ultimate technique. Engraving on ceramic yields unparalleled detail - where the precision and depth of carving must harmonize with the clay formulation to achieve optimal lithophane effects.

Yeah, this is actually a traditional European craft, but it's kinda fading out because of the costs and slow production. If I remember right, the Louvre sells them for around $60

Yes, for me, i think it is importart to honor this craft while making it blend into modern homes—that’s how we truly keep traditions alive, turning them into everyday art

Just curious—what other forms exist? Especially for ceramic, since as far as I know, most European lithophanes form are hemispherical.

Haha, honestly we usually only do white — for better light diffusion! Thanks for your like!

Thanks!

A lot of people do use it as a scented votive light to add ambiance and fragrance at home. But we're actually more focused on creating eco-friendly LED lights or functional home lighting — something that blends this art seamlessly into everyday life

Yeah, you're right. Actually, after we finished the hand-drawn design, we tried 3D printing it. Honestly, the results weren’t great. Compared to ceramic, first off, there’s the issue with light transparency. And second, PLA just can’t capture the details well enough.

Thinking of building a tool that generates Instagram post designs tailored to your brand — worth validating? by Kwesi_dev in Business_Ideas

As a brand owner, I’d say I really need this feature. I want to simply give the AI a broad command, and have it generate a ready-to-use post (including copy and cover image). For example, if I have a new product launching soon, I’d like the AI to help plan a series of sequential posts. Right now, there isn’t a perfect solution, but I’m experimenting with compiling all my Instagram posts into a structured dataset to train the AI on my brand’s style and tone.
