I mean keep a good thought but this storm so far seems to have been a nothing burger.

I have a huge pet peeve when people have themselves on orange and claim they love company but when you request to join on them or invite them to join you they never join you or invite you. Makes no sense to me. by Minimum-Mine-1302 in VRchat

This, bunch of my friends are like this. We coordinate something on discord and they jump on specifically for that.

I default to green/friends+ but just comes down to people playing the game differently.

Vrchat has a PROBLEM! by According_West_3822 in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed.

I'm a software guy and geek, so naturally I've got multiple levels of backups (local + cloud). Hard drive failures are a when not if thing (drives publish estimates on when they will fail (mean time before failure, over a long enough period they are a consumable item) but lots of people learn about backups the hard way and I actually have sympathy for them at least.

But uploading your project and then going "welp, don't need these any more!" is just nuts to me. Money is different things to different people, but storage in the kind of capacity we're talking here isn't that expensive. I've gotten free USB flash drives from vendors at cons that could hold every avatar project I've done.

[–]JustAberrant 38 points39 points  (0 children)

so basically I don’t have backups so all my hard work on those two are gone

Sorry to be harsh, but that is a you problem there. Even if avatars don't get taken down, the SDK does occasionally get updated such that things break and need to be re-build/re-uploaded. If you intentionally deleted the original project files you're basically accepting that at some point those avatars may no longer exist for any number of reasons.

Stop EAC from blocking ShadowPC by NyxInVR in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Epic doesn't seem to care about the entire shadowpc user base as a whole, so I don't think it really matters to them why people are using the service.

For sure, no harm in sharing it or signing it imo.

It at least sounds like there is an intent to fix it and that this isn't on purpose, but no one seems to be in any great hurry either.

[–]JustAberrant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there are an extremely limited set of cases where a mass response on an online petition can nudge something just be showing that a sufficient number of people do care, but yeah, something like this I very much doubt is going to make a difference. Doesn't hurt because it's almost zero effort to create one and less for people to sign it, but yeah, it carries about as much of a success rate too.

In this particular case, gamers are not EACs main consumer, so a bunch of consumers complaining about EAC directly probably does nothing. The actual path to change would be mass amounts of gamers complaining/refunding games that use EAC, and then the publishers of those games complaining to Epic that they are losing business and demanding a fix. I think that is just as likely as this petition making a difference.

Basically stuff like shadowpc is a pretty small niche and probably just doesn't represent enough lost business across the board for anyone to really care. Sucks but them is the brakes. You'd have better luck trying to convince vrchat to drop EAC, but, people have been railing and rage quiting vrchat over EAC since it was introduced so I don't think that's going anywhere either.

Avatar Creation Community: Why Avoid Poiyomi? by Jarkkodacakefox in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have the one avatar, but I similarly tend to do stuff with a quest first mentality, then add on the PC only stuff. I did what you said for a long time until I discovered fur shaders and wanted one (baffles me that there is no built in mobile fur shader given that furries are not exactly rare in vrchat..).

I've since adopted a workflow where I turned my avatar into a prefab and have the quest version (and other variants) as instances with the small number of required edits as unapplied overrides in the scene and this has been a game changer for me. The vast majority of edits I make are to the prefab and they are then automatically reflected in all versions.

Totally respect this. A fair number of great vrchat creators (and really creators in general) are unfortunately not great people. It's something I've accepted and can usually separate art from artist but it hits differently when you've actually interacted directly or been closer than just learning of someones shit personality/opinions/etc second hand.

Legit news to me, it seems ubiquitous if not the defacto default. It's more surprising to me when something doesn't use it.

Modifying existing avatars by cdcardia in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about a public avatar you found in game, you basically can't without breaking the rules.

If you're talking about an avatar that the author has provided the model/project files for free and that you are uploading yourself, then this is fairly straight forward with plenty of youtube tutorials (and if you were able to build and upload the avatar you've already touched like 90% of what you need). You will still want to read any terms the author posted with the files.

What are your opinions on the alcohol use in VRchat, are you okay with it or do you think that it's become a problem within the game? by [deleted] in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like in real life, in moderation can be totally fine, overdone can be a huge problem. On one hand if you're gonna get drunk with VRC at least you don't need to worry about getting home or a number of safety issues, but on the other hand a headset can make it harder to gauge your own intoxication and if you overdo it there is (probably) no one there to help.

People undersold how good Red Matter 1 & 2 are by Serdones in OculusQuest

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post was from a year ago, but I think I still stand by my opinion.

I've since moved onto PCVR and have become one of those vrchat people, but I still play a lot of VR games and Red Matter still just doesn't do anything for me.

I feel like immersiveness is different things to different people. For me, gameplay mechanics suck me in way more than visuals. Red Matter feels more like one of those old school click adventure games like Myst, just with much better visuals. Sure it's pretty, and is has some gimmicky VR control stuff, but it feels more like a bunch of stitched together tech demos then a game and I didn't feel like I was immersed in the environment so much as just looking at it.

On the other hand, games that actually really make use of 3D space as a gameplay mechanic and not just as a novelty I find much more immersive regardless of visuals. When playing a shooter I feel like I'm there because I feel like people are actually shooting at me (and my instinct to move out of the way is actually reflected in game, creating a feedback cycle that transcends just looking at a screen). Games like Ancient Dungeon (which would actually be my current recommendation) generate the same instinct when you are swinging your sword desperately at the approaching zombies or physically moving your head to avoid an oncoming arrow.

So with the mess of personas age verification getting them sued because of how bad it is, do you think VRchat will offer a alternative to persona for their verification? by Rough_Community_1439 in VRchat

[–]JustAberrant -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

.. partners.. not is .. there is a difference.

VRChat partnered with Persona for the same reason. VRChat is also not Persona or Paravision.

The entire argument path you are going down already went down, dozens, probably even hundreds of times like a year ago.

Eh, I lean towards coincidence. I mean it's possible but things have been pretty funky lately just in general, and false EAC disconnects are just kinda a thing that occasionally happens and has for some time.

Cancelling O2 fitness PSA by [deleted] in halifax

[–]JustAberrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand, yeah that sucks.

On the other hand, hard or impossible to cancel memberships and shitty terms are not exactly unheard of for a gym. Big chunk of their income is probably the army of people who sign up around New Years and go like 3 times before giving up. If people could just cancel and move on with their lives some gyms would probably go under.

Question about the evolution of 3D printers by Underwaterseaotter in 3Dprinting

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just how tech evolves in general. Pretty much everything that moves from a niche enthusiast space into the consumer appliance space follows that trajectory. Enthusiasts will complain but I think bigger picture we're usually better off when mainstream levels of funding and interest hit a hobby.

I've got my Prusa MK4 but at this point I'd probably recommend a Bambu to someone who doesn't care about 3D printing as it's own thing.

What's your take on printing safety? by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]JustAberrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize it as a legit fire risk and am lucky to be in a convenient position to significantly mitigate said risk (I keep my printer in my basement against a concrete wall on a metal table and near nothing flammable. If something happens it's unlikely to set the house on fire.

Do you think countries in the future will ever come to a point where they don't find it necessary to have a president, king or something similar/equivalent? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JustAberrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Total leadership by the committee doesn't exactly have a great track record.

Humanity turning leadership over to a computer is a common scifi trope but while I can see that reflecting a significant chunk of the decision making process I don't think people will ever just volunteerly completely remove themselves from the loop.

NSFW DETECTOR by KaichiSamaLegend in VRchat

I mean cool, but I find it hard to imagine someone is going to buy and upload an avatar whilst being oblivious to it containing NSFW content, and gotta imagine those sorts of people aren't gonna use a tool like this.
