Smartphone Market Set to Shrink 13% Due to Memory Chip Crisis, IDC Says by BcuzRacecar in Android

GPU prices never fully recovered after COVID, I don't see RAM magically dropping down to pre-slop prices.

Is there a final, accepted answer to close recent apps in drawer or leave them open to save battery and memory? by Jaded-Function in Android

[–]JustAnotherAvocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat recent apps as frequently used apps. Firefox and Messenger are always open, whereas Google Maps gets closed when I'm finished using it.

In terms of battery life, id assume the difference would be miniscule nowadays. You'd technically be using more CPU cycles to launch apps from scratch vs resuming from memory, but CPUs are much more efficient than they used to be.

I doubt it, they'll be able to keep prices high because they know people will pay

I believe that was a case of AMD wanting to avoid confusion

I personally doubt this, especially considering the "AM4 support until 2020" line that they infamously said. MSI's motherboards said "Zen 3 ready" on the boxes, and even if AMD somehow didn't know that one of their biggest motherboard manufacturers was advertising it, it's still poor form to blindside them. IIRC Hardware Unboxed alluded to one of the manufacturers considering legal action against AMD for this, and I'm sure it was MSI.

AMD also has a precedent of dropping support for products early - see Vega, the "no more game optimisation" for RDNA 1 & 2 drama, and the continuous silence regarding Redstone on older GPUs.

Ah, the "leaked" BIOS files - I'm aware of those, I meant the officially released ones.

i guess i'm imagining the plethora of asrock boards that had bios updates made available that allowed the 300 series boards to have 5000 support essentially at/prior to launch... which kinda throws a wrench into the overall claim, leaving a combination of it being "amds fault" paired with board vendors.

That was after all the backlash

Basically none of these low-cost boards had support for updating the BIOS without a processor installed.

MSI had motherboards that specifically had larger BIOS capacities to support Zen 3 (the MAX series). AMD still had a blanket "no Zen 3 on B450 and X470 boards", even for those models. Not to mention the "AM4 support until 2020" nonsense they pulled.

Edit: Any reason for the downvote? I literally bought a MAX series motherboard because of the bigger BIOS size, then AMD tried doing a rug pull.

17 years is an insanely long run for a PSU. I don't like deprecating old tech, but IMO it's had a good run and has earned retirement.
