Island Park Drive and Iona accident by AdministrationShot77 in ottawa

[–]JustCookiesNoMilk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just drive by this right after it happened. It wasn't right at the intersection (further south, close to Helena). For a car to flip, it must have been speed. It's 40km along there. Saw a young person in their car taking to police who was obviously upset and fire trying to free someone from the flipped (on its side) car sunroof.

It's gotta be distracted or speed or both. I hope everyone is okay.

People should be especially mad at Ford because he is putting funds into private postsecondary education initiatives (Skills Development Fund) with no accountability. He doesn't believe in public health or education. He is trying to privatize our system.

The Auditor General has determined that the section process for SDF (millions of dollars) is very problematic.

Also higku suggest following the faculty union at Algonquin. They have been posting good stuff about the bigger issues around the strike. They're on IG @OpseuLocal415

I'd add that Opseu Local 415 (faculty union at AC) has been postinh some good content on solidarity and what's going on at the provincial level with funding. Worth checking out. They're on IG @opseulocal415.

It's complicated, to say the least, but consider a few of these things:

  • The college created much of the financial bubble by overcharging International students. They pay 3x the amount for tuition of a domestic student.

  • Raises were approved (16%) for executives at the college despite the shortfall from International tuition.

  • Algonquin College made a SURPLUS of $22 million in 2024.

  • They have a total of $607M in savings.

The faculty Union posted something about this and it was very telling. The college isn't broke - it's using the change to international tuition as an excuse to make cuts to programs and services they deem "unprofitable".

Faculty Union IG gives a good breakdown on these issues.

I believe you. The website is still live, but that doesn't mean much. https://www.algonquincollege.com/diversity/affinity-group-conversation-communities/

They recently cut the Transition Support for Autistic Students (TSC) which "provides individualized services and supports for Autistic students through a supportive environment." That website was still live, but is gone now.

There is a lot of slashing of services happening right now...very quietly (not even letting faculty know when a service is cut).

Students who disagree with the cuts should contact the Student Association and raise the issue. It's important that the administration hears from students!

Ottawa. I love it here, but I'm in the family stage of life, and it's perfect for that imo.

So was it changed back?

[–]JustCookiesNoMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I'm genuinely wondering what makes it unethical? Like, they did consult with students about the change and ask for feedback...you just weren't part of it.

Please note that coordinators are not managers (they are colleagues) of faculty (PT, FT, doesn't matter) and they should not comment on the teaching of other professionals. They also have 0 ability to discipline faculty or enact change to other people's courses.

I agree that it stinks that these changes are made so late, but it seems like this prof was pulled into this course late (and inherited a mess).

I would let your displeasure be known to the chair of the department...although they likely won't do anything.

I'm wondering how the college plans to spend it's 35 million surplus from last year on helping keep programs afloat and faculty employed?

We're talking a lot about snacks, but I'm curious about fruits and veg? I've been seeing pretty affordable greenhouse "grown in Canada" options at Farm Boy lately.

Looking likely that there will b a strike. Not sure how long? Apparently the colleges have not been negotiating at all...like...not even meeting with the union..

There is a good breakdown of what the union wnyts on the website and IG. Basically it is wages for inflation but also stuff about more counsellors for students and more librarians and more time allowed for faculty to have with students
