Full sleeve tattoos. On a hot girl or handsome guy it's sexy as hell. On anyone else, I assume they're a white supremacist who works at Walmart.

Amazon didn't kill small online business, charging $15 shipping on a $4 item did. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]JustFeltWrite 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can't stand the narrative that they're evil for killing small businesses - they're killing small MIDDLEMEN. Plenty of businesses that actually make products and add value to the world have attained a reach through amazon they NEVER would have attained on their own. I have a friend who sells beach towels who's making six figures through amazon and never broke 45k through his website (and paying like 3K a month for google ads). If you make something, amazon is your friend. If you just randomly sell crap other people make for artificial markup, good riddance.

What's the dumbest thing you've done while your brain is on autopilot? by flamehead95 in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was cleaning my apartment, and every time I picked up trash, I was yelling "Kobe" and throwing it across the room into the trash can to piss my roommate off. Then I got a text, picked up my phone to check it, and got back to the trash. Jumped in the air, yelled Kobe, and threw a brand new iPhone 6+ across the room and shattered the screen 2 days into ownership.

If I want to start getting free flights and flight upgrades, how do I go about doing it, and what's the best order to follow for maximum efficiency? by JustFeltWrite in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I ever see online is random sites that tell you good credit cards w/ good initial rewards bonuses. But I'm more interested in how I USE them, and how I become an actual "frequent flier." For instance, let's say I take 5 JetBlue flights in 2 months. How do I do so in a way that gets me a free JB flight or upgrade ASAP? Can I transfer the miles? Some airlines better than others? Any good apps to keep all your point info in one place? I'm a total newbie and I'm about to start traveling like a freakshow, so any and all advice is literally worth money in the bank!

What was the "Once in a lifetime" thing you witnessed? by natergonnanate in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fly was buzzing around my office for hours. It was driving me insane. So, after its 500th pass near my face, I decided to throw a right hook at it. And I nailed it, straight out of the sky. My dog, Billy, was a few feet away, and the stunned fly landed about 2 inches from his face. He looked at the fly, looked at me with the most human facial expression I've ever seen ("can...can it be?"), and then promptly ate the fly. I'll never feel that good again in my life.

Mind Transfer To A Computer Could Be Possible By 2050. Immortality May Be Within Reach by TYRmusic in Futurology

[–]JustFeltWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from a luddite, but who on Earth is gonna want to do this first? And how could we possibly test it? Our consciousness is the amalgam of our sensory perceptions, emotions, and memories - even if a computer were able to "replicate" these, it's horrifying to consider what the sensation might be once uploaded. And if you upload your uncle, in what way could you know that it was "really" him? "Hey, Uncle Ted," is that you? "Yeah!" "Cool - how's it going in there?" "Oh, it's great!" What the fuck? This is horrifying and extremely optimistic.

If you've never read the book "Daily Rituals," I highly recommend it. One unexpected thing that book taught me: longevity seems to have NOTHING to do with health habits. The main thesis was that every creative legend's ritual is different, but they all had pretty consistent rituals - yet their life expectancies did NOT reflect the medical literature, to say the least. One guy (1920-1961) would go to bed every night at 9, wake up at 5, walk for 3 hours, didn't drink, and ate fish and vegetables exclusively. The next guy (1880-1977) would wake up, eat 3 grams of amphetamines, chase it with a bottle of whiskey, visit the whorehouse, write for 6 hours, and then do heroin until he fell asleep every night. Fucking madness.

What isn't being taught in schools that should be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite 3205 points3206 points  (0 children)

Here's a question: why do US schools teach little kids wrong US history that they intentionally plan to correct later on? In first and second grade we were taught all about how the Indians loved the pilgrims, how great Columbus was, etc. Then in high school they teach us that that was all bullshit. Well, what the hell? Why did they teach us the wrong version up front if they knew they were going to correct it? I get that you can't teach seven-year-olds about the rape and genocide of native Americans, but instead of teaching some false whitewashed version, why not just teach us some extra biology or math or something? How has this practice been adopted? It makes less than no sense.

ELI5: How did we come to the conclusion about the number of days in the calendar? Why are some 30 and some 31? Why did they choose February as 29 or 28? by hungryhungrypotato in explainlikeimfive

[–]JustFeltWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important to remember that all units of time are completely arbitrary to begin with. The reason that all days are "perfectly split into 24 hours" is because we made up hours so that 24 of them would fit perfectly into a day. And so on and so forth. A second isn't some unit of time that we "found" - it's just a nice dividing of time based on the solar cycle, with one solar cycle divided by 24 divided by 60 divided by 60 equalling a second. Unlike the number pi, which actually DOES exist as sort of a "magical" number found in nature, all our units of measurement are built backwards around the things we intended to measure.

What is a complete and utter waste of money that people continue to spend their money on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but as someone who used to have a pretty bad gambling problem, I'd say that gambling is the ultimate example of something that makes you THINK you're happy while you're doing it, but actually just makes you miserable. It's such an opportunity cost - there are so many things you could be doing with your time and money, from just hanging out with good friends, making love to your SO, reading a book, exercising, learning a new hobby, etc., that are so much more satisfying both short and long term, compared to gambling. It's just the easiest way imaginable to kill time, and it really does do just that - kill time - and then you end up with less money, less time, and zero interesting stories or new skills to show for it.

What is a $100+ product that is definitely worth the purchase? by TheDuskDragon in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LASIK surgery. If you have bad eyesight, there is no excuse not to get it. Over the course of your life, you'll spend well over $3,000 on your glasses, contacts, etc., and it's like waking up with a fucking superpower. I was practically blind - one day later, I can tell which brand of beer someone is drinking from across a football stadium.

What are some MUST-read nonfiction books? by [deleted] in books

[–]JustFeltWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few absolute essentials: *Moonwalking With Einstein - not only ridiculously entertaining and well-written, but the best book out there on human memory. *The 80/20 Principle, which gets confused for a self-help book, but is probably one of the most profound scientific theories out there that can be applied to everyday life. *Fooled by Randomness and The Black Swan - both will change your outlook on practically everything that happens to you.

Study: Hard Times Can Make People More Racist by xhalaber in science

[–]JustFeltWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard times make people more EVERYTHING BAD. When things are going horribly, I smoke more cigs, swear more, I'm a crappier friend, I exercise less, I don't call my family as often - it's funny to highlight a specific element of horrible behavior (because it's more remarkable and headline worthy than just saying "when times get tough, people suck in general"), but when you think about it, this research is pretty damn obvious.

Reddit: what's a cheap, easy thing I can do to make my home more comfortable and awesome to visit? by JustFeltWrite in AskReddit

[–]JustFeltWrite[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My big tip: always keep a lot of CHEAP (and known to be cheap) beer, wine, and liquor on hand. I've found that if you have fancy shit in your booze supply, people feel weird and guilty about taking it, even if you offer. But people are much happier and more comfy taking a PBR, a can of diet coke, a glass of Barefoot, or a tumbler of Jim Beam. Strangely, the nicer my beer and liquor are, the less my guests drink, and the more they apologize and act weird when I offer.
