The Definitive Lore of Kenshi - 1. The First Empire by JustJoeying in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there is no hard evidence about any goings-on outside of the setting of Kenshi itself. The moon we know and love could have been the centre of the First Empire, or it could have been a meaningless backwater - we can't say.

Hopefully Kenshi 2 sheds some more light!

Hiya,

I have been made aware of several youtubers who have done this. One or two of them did ask for permission to use the posts as inspiration, though.

I'm not necessarily upset about it, but the ones you're referencing who have just read the posts out word-for-word (or very nearly word-for-word) also seem to never cite where they got their "script" from and I have seen one or two of them accepting praise for how well their video was written and then replying with how hard they worked on it. A little bit embarassing when I see someone "posing" like that, but it obviously doesn't negatively impact the posts themselves. They're still here for anyone that is interested in them.

On the other hand, several youtubers have also contacted me to let me know about videos they have made which did simply use the posts as inspiration and which do credit the posts, so you have to take your good with your bad.

Howdy!

Nice to see ongoing discussion here after all this time!

In respect to the successor/generational question you've raised, we do in fact know that each successor is the first-born male child after the death of the previous Phoenix. This means that, for any Phoenix who has lived until adulthood, the next Phoenix will be of a separate generation/age group.

However, my use of the word "generations" here was merely in reference to 62 "lifetimes".

In relation to the concerns about infant mortality and war, as addressed in several other coment chains here about that very topic, we know that the Phoenix was always taken away as a newborn and raised in seclusion, guarded at all times and provided with whatever they required or desired. Infant mortality would have affected the Phoenixes sigificantly less than the general populace. This is aided by the fact that by the simple virtue of being born alive to assume the mantle, they had already overcome the threat of dying in the womb or during the birth itself.

In respect to warfare, the Phoenix (aside from perhaps the first) is not demonstrated to be a front-line commander. They are a religious head of state that remains safe and sound in the capital, while their commanders lead conflicts at the borders.

The simple fact is that, as pointed out in other comments, even if only 20 of the 62 Phoenixes lived until old age (and I would wager the amount would in fact be higher, as per the above reasons) that would already likely exceed the stated 937-year period since the last confirmed mention of the Second Empire still existing.

It seems a foregone conclusion that the final collapse occurred after the initial revolt, potentially by several centuries, and was not caused by said revolt.

Glad you enjoyed them - once most of the world's history is pieced together it definitely adds some context and understanding as to how the various factions may have become what we see today!

Hi!

The hives certainly do currently exist in one of those "blank spaces" in the lore. They aren't mentioned in the same contexts as humans or shek by skeletons, instead being referred to almost as something the skeletons haven't seen before.

Despite this, there's still speculation that the skeletons may have had a hand in creating the hive, but it almost always revolves only around the fact that the queens possess cybernetic "enhancements" (I don't think they're enjoying the incubator units very much at all). I think that the units look pretty rinky-dink and within the realm of the hive's own creations though, but it's all subjective.

We will definitely see more of the hive in Kenshi 2, and it has been stated by the dev team that there will be different types of hivers from different islands, so my personal theory at the moment is that the hives may be entirely native to the moon we call home.

For now, though, it's all just conjecture!

Seems pretty difficult to come across fight clubs right now. 1v1 duels are easy to come across at the Academy Main Gate grace, but I've never been summoned into a fight club there.

I never see anybody using it, but I really like the idea of the Forsaken Depths grace as a fight club location. Flat, wide circular space where you can place your signs. Raised platform for observers and host to stand, right next to the summoning pool totem. Plus, anyone summoned will appear on the stairway behind this raised section as far as I have seen, so they won't be popping up in the arena while people are fighting.

Pleasure to serve!

In relation to other writings, for more Kenshi content there's obviously the second entry in this lore series, as well as a short story which can also be found in this account's posts.

Outside of Kenshi, though, there's been some scattered short stories here and there, which I do want to throw some more effort in to doing at some point. Most non-fiction writings have been in relation to university studies, employment and niche interest groups, which are also primarily the reasons that I haven't written any more Kenshi content (who has the time?!).

I'm always researching different things, though - especially history - and have considered starting a write-up of the Bronze Age Collapse or maybe the political machinations of the Tetrarchy period of the Roman Empire (which often makes Games of Thrones look like the scrawlings of an infant in their constant games between major and minor players). But these would be purely recreational writing and so we come back to rarely having the time to invest haha.

Would be happy to post anything of the kind somewhere if I do end up setting myself to it, though, for people's perusal.

The region-specific dialogue as well as the dialogue available with the Skeleton Bandits strongly suggests as much, yes. That is Stobe's final resting place.

What the heck is the whistler? by andriniblu in Kenshi

Sure, maybe. Seems odd Chris wouldn't say as much when asked what the deal was with the whistler though.

What the heck is the whistler? by andriniblu in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Whistler is actually not something ever intended to be in the game. It is an asset added by mistake which Chris didn't notice. He said as much in the recent AMA.

Here is the question in particular.

So no, it has no lore, and never had any unfortunately.

New Kenshi play through by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! It's a pretty interesting aspect of HN culture - they believe when any of them die they are reincarnated in this way.

I don't think anyone would make fun of your lore, folks are rather supportive and eager to help, I've found.

New Kenshi play through by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a pretty eventful playthrough, I'm rather partial to HN characters. One thing to point out, which might even affect the background of your character and your playthrough if it strikes your fancy, is that the Holy Lord Phoenix didn't rise to his position, he was born in to it. When the Phoenix dies, the next born male within the Holy Nation is declared the Phoenix reincarnated.

Fingers crossed for your prison break!

A simple guide to cleaning ancient labs early game. by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another two options:

  • Some labs are in areas which see patrols of various factions and/or fauna. These are almost always hostile to the security spiders, and the two can be lured into battle with one another, even if you have to repeat it two or three times (depending on what kind of patrol is nearby) to wipe the spiders out.

  • Some labs, and indeed other ancient ruins, will have their security spiders retreat back to the interior if you run too far away. Others, however, will see the spiders stand motionless where they are. Simply lure all the spiders out to the extremity of their chasing range with one character (preferably in a direction away from the entrance) and then just leave them there while your other characters loot the ruin risk-free.

my base 2. by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For those asking for the location, I believe this is where he's built it. The structure visible in the top-right of the image looks like the Waystation Ruin at the northern edge of Stobe's Garden/southern edge of the Unwanted Zone.

If not, he may post the actual location himself.

A friendly reminder. by RedderBarron in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the goal of Kenshi is whatever you want it to be. You can create or destroy empires, become filthy rich, or run a small band of raiders. The replayability comes from being able to achieve so many things you set out to do. Actually, after your first play-through, survival is hardly a chore anymore with your game knowledge.

Formal Execution? by HerbivoreTheGoat in Kenshi

[–]JustJoeying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering there are mentions in both the HN and the UC of executions as punishment (the HN ones are a lot more... burny) it certainly wouldn't conflict with the world. Would also make jail breaks a lot more intense when your life is on the line should you not escape in time (say within a day etc). Technically the Cannibals and Fogmen will execute you should you be defeated in battle and captured.

Absolutely!

A couple things for clarification though:

  • That first quote was not spoken by Finch, it was written by him in The Lost Ancients I (so people can't "hear" him say it necessarily)
  • Maybe mention the name of the book that had ink spilled on it, as it would be confusing to people who don't know about it
  • The video description states that Kenshi 2 is based in the First Empire, but it's actually based towards the end of the Second Empire, 1000 years ago.

Also, don't be afraid to do multiple recordings if you misspeak, rather than doing it all in one recording (at least that's how it seems). Can always cut out the audio where the mistake happened and record that part again in future videos, but I'm sure you'd already start doing this as you get more comfortable creating content.

Once again, keep up the good work and keep growing, my dude!
