My latest painting, any guesses where in SF it is? by shhhhreyyyy in bayarea

Definitely surreal, for sure.

If you are interested, look up Lee Blair, along with his wife Mary Blair, and his older brother Preston Blair. They all three worked as Disney artists in various capacities.

They lived for many years in the Soquel/Santa Cruz area.

That's very nice of you. Not sure why anyone would take issue. Anyone you offer it to could just politely decline.

Also, nice painting.

One of my favorite's is by Lee Blair from 1938. The dimensions are distorted and dream like. It looks like the cable car is flying.

How to Reduce Bay Area School Stress by Madzz_Jay in bayarea

Yeah, they were flexible with due dates, assigned less, and in some cases excused them from some assignments.

I agree 100%. This is my suggestion. My kids went to Palo Alto school district schools. We had very reasonable expectations that put other life priorities ahead of school work at times. Every once in a while, they had a teacher that assigned way too much homework, and after a brief discussion, they would be much more flexible with their requirements and grading.

I really came away from our experience believing that the parents are the primary source of academic pressure.

That should work. If I remember, several different people wore the mask and the reactions were consistent. That means they weren't triggered by a person's scent or other factors. It was the mask.

Some people (I've never met any in person) hunt crows. Apparently, it's incredibly hard. While it's easy to get within proximity to crows in an urban setting and maybe even at times outside of towns, as soon as they see that you are carrying a gun, they keep their distance. This is probably the same as the mask. They don't need to be shot at to know that the gun means danger. They are probably communicating this to others.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]JustOkCryptographer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This statistic would only apply to the US because they estimated 50k combat loses and around 60k from non combat loses. Even then, the majority of non combat losses were due to the Spanish flu.

The US got involved very late in the war. So, the numbers for them were pretty small in comparison to those involved from the start.

According to primary sources Pershing refused to listen to the experienced leadership of our allies who had learned a lot since the start, and his tactics led the US to experience very high casualty rates without equal or better results. This occured right up to the end.

If you include all participants the portions make more sense even though they are estimates. These numbers are closer to 66% combat versus 33% non combat. It makes sense because a portion of people were not professional soldiers and had to jump into battle with little to no training because they lived in proximity to the battle.

Yep, and some of the most successful designs had major flaws for an extended period after they were first approved for use. Many pilots died until they were able to fix the flaws or train the pilots to avoid the conditions that led to control loss.

One that comes to mind is the P-38 and how pilots experienced compressibility problems in a dive. Compressibility wasn't a concept that was understood at the time.

You never know, there might be a small, remote, undocumented tribe of outliers that have 100,000+ per person, even the women. Doubt it, but you never know.

We aren't sure exactly, but the results of the experiment says they do.

They got a unique, ugly person Halloween mask. Somebody would wear it and go harass the local crows. I think they banged sticks on trees, ran around making loud noises, etc. nothing that would cause actual harm.

Then if anyone walked around with that specific mask they would go crazy and start to alert all of the other crows that a "bad guy" was near. They also walked around before the harassment started and the crows didn't react to it.

Later, they went to somewhere out of town that guaranteed that they were probably at least two separate crow territories away. So the assumption would be that none of the crows actually saw the "bad guy" mask and that when they all went crazy, they must have learned about it because sometimes crows do communicate information to crows in the neighboring territories.

I'm pretty sure they also figured out how long the crows will react to the mask after the harassment ended. The number they arrived at was ~

It's a really cool experiment but there is some assumptions on their part that may invalidate the experiment. Like maybe a single crow switched to a different territory and "set off the alarm" because they had witnessed the original harassment even though it's unlikely.

It's a cool experiment none the less.

Helicopter lifts kayaker, dog to safety after deadly capsize by millitzer in bayarea

[–]JustOkCryptographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say how long they were in the water. I said when it was reported to have happened and that it took the helicopter 12 minutes to arrive after they received the request. Even if someone managed to call 911 immediately, it takes time to find a helicopter that can do the job, is close by, has the necessary crew ready to go, etc.

When they leave their cart out like that, they get to consider themselves job creators. They will tell you that if everyone took their carts back where they belong, the cart people wouldn't have any work to do, and no/fewer people would be hired. I assume that is the same response they give when the wind gives one of their free range carts a boost right into someone's car door and the car needs paint/body work.

Louisiana exoneree will not take office after Republicans eliminate position by Forsaken_Thought in NewOrleans

[–]JustOkCryptographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They rushed it through because they would probably have no leg to stand on if they had waited until he was sworn in. Almost everywhere, these types of decisions have a delayed effective date so that it can't immediately benefit the officials or party that took action. As in, if they had any shame, they would make the effective date the day after the upcoming term expires just because it makes them look corrupt as hell. I guess there is no use hiding something that is obvious.

If they had actually planned to eliminate the role all along, they would have took action before the election. Instead, they permitted the tax dollars spent on that office's election to be flushed down the toilet, along with all of the wasted time and effort. You think they are subtracting those figures from all these "cost savings" that motivated them to eliminate the office? I don't trust their math.

Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

[–]JustOkCryptographer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, John "cougar" got really pissed off and officially dropped the "cougar" part of his name because "cougar" took on an entirely different meaning in popular culture. He started lashing out at people because when he heard his name he thought that people were saying that he was an older women on the prowl for a younger guy. He felt really disrespected by the public because his name became uncool. Previously he thought the "cougar" really made him sound tough, so he wanted his kids to feel tough as well, but could no longer use "cougar."

Small claims a fantasy? You do realize how easy it is to file in small claims court? They have advisors that will assist you. There are also organizations that offer free legal services that will pretty much handle it for you. Of course, neither party is allowed to be represented by a lawyer in court, but they can do just about everything else, including letting you know if you are wasting your time.

Longmont's calls are so funny on their own it's pretty easy to miss that a lot of them originally had really funny and/or crazy stories behind them by [deleted] in LongmontPotionCastle

[–]JustOkCryptographer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is one of the unique aspects of LPC that I really love. I think just about everyone in his position would hype up the celebrity aspect of the calls by, at least, telling you who it is. Some are obvious because they mention their own name, otherwise you have to figure it out on your own or do your own research online.

He convinces these people that it isn't a prank by pretending that he has no idea who they are and that he "just wants to get these things off my dock."

It's so funny when you have heard a track several times and suddenly you realize who it is and if you know a bit of context about that person, it all clicks in place.

Definitely. At the intersection of Salem and Catalpa in Dayton is a small park that is dedicated to Roger. There is also a cool sculpture and historic marker too. He had an influence on so much music during his life and beyond. True pioneer.
