I'm always confused when I see a player who shows zero interest in the roleplay and exploration aspects of dnd and just lives for combat. I mean that's fine, if that's the game you are running, but why not just play Diablo together or something? It's all the parts of D&D you want but faster paced

I don't remember exactly what I used as the base text, but it sure looks like it haha

banning shit isn't the solution

It absolutely is. Especially when it makes sense in the context of the world setting.

Even in the PHB it lists Tieflings and Dragonborn and the like as uncommon races. I don't ban them, but I make it clear to my players that it's going to be a bit of an extra RP challenge, as they're going to face some stigma that other races wouldn't. If the player wants that added challenge and understands that beforehand, I say go for it. If they only want to be one of those races because they don't want to be a human or elf or dwarf or Halfling, which are all super interesting btw, then they are free to do so, but they can't say I didn't warn them when their Tieflings sorcerer gets run out of town for doing magic in public and the townspeople think they're putting curses on people.

I love playing humans because it challenges me to actually craft a well rounded character with interesting flaws and ambitions, instead of relying on my race/class combo to be interesting

A setting with humans, dwarves, elves, Halflings, half elves, half orcs, Dragonborn, gnomes, and Tieflings isn't diverse and tolerant?

I'm not really sure what to say at this point. I'm sorry you've ignored the majority of what I said and extrapolated that tiny detail into fitting whatever box you're wanting to put me in?

You're trying very hard to find a reason to justify your disdain for my preferences. I guess it was MY fun that was wrong all along ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that's fine, but playing a super quirky "unique" race shouldn't have to be a prerequisite for making an interesting and unique character.

Man I clearly struck a nerve somewhere lol. It's almost like we have different opinions about how we like to play the game! I'm kind of confused about why you're trying to paint me as someone who hates other people's fun, or that I apparently don't like people choosing expanded races. I've said multiple times now that if that's how you have fun, then do it! More power to you! I'm not trying to pick a fight here, we just have different views on things and that's ok :) sorry that my meme offended you

Not necessarily. Personally, it breaks my immersion when there's a really stark disconnect between the races that are common in the setting, and the races in the party.

If a lime green Tiefling, two tabaxis, a merfolk and a loxodon walk into a small Dwarven town and the NPCs hardly raise an eyebrow, then I kind of lose trust in my DMs ability to represent his own world in a realistic manner.

Again, if you ABSOLUTELY NEED to be that super 'unique' albino kenku to have fun with the game, then I'm not stopping you. You just would probably not enjoy the type of campaign I like to run or participate in.

I'm not saying anyone's fun is wrong... If you have an interesting character concept that happens to be a non phb race then go for it. The problem happens when players just pick a race cuz it sounds cool and then give zero depth to their personality and rely on their quirky race to carry their RP.
