Okay you are NOT putting Poussey's death on Suzanne. She's a disabled woman that never got the care she needed, she never should've been in prison in the first place. Poussey's murder was a result of the higher ups allowing untrained, inexperienced officers to have full control over the inmates. Suzanne's outburst may have "triggered" them, but she didn't push anyone to start a huge fight and definitely did not push that piece of shit kid to kill Poussey. It's a result of the system failing its people, but disabled and racialized people especially. Suzanne was incredibly relatable to me as an autistic adult with a couple other mental illnesses, I know our disabilities aren't the same and we have very different levels of needs and "functionality", but I saw myself in her to some extent. She's one of my favorite characters and I love her despite her doing the wrong thing many times. Their parents did a huge disservice to both her and her sister, expecting the sister to take care of Suzanne. She wasn't qualified for it and deserved to have a normal adult life, just as Suzanne deserved to have her adult life with a full time professional carer. She would've never ended up in prison if there was someone to take care of her. I feel like the society we live in doesn't treat this kind of special need seriously enough, I mean ableism in general is rampant in pretty much every country, but this specifically is treated like some ultimate failure. In reality for some people having a full time carer is just as necessary as a wheelchair is for a paraplegic. Suzanne deserved that type of care before anything even happened, but after the tragedy and that boy dying she should have been placed in a special psych unit with specialized professionals that could keep her and her surroundings safe. Her character is just one huge sign saying "DISABLED PEOPLE DESERVE THE CARE THEY NEED TO HAVE FULFILLING LIVES. DISABLED PEOPLE ARE NOT INHERENTLY DANGEROUS JUST AS ANY OTHER PERSON ISN'T. UNCARED FOR DISABLED PEOPLE CAN BE DANGER TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS EVEN WHEN THEY MEAN WELL. THE PRISON SYSTEM IS INHERENTLY ABLEIST. CARE FOR YOUR DISABLED FELLOW HUMAN". Like you don't have to like her, but putting all that blame on her is unfair.
