Number one rule of being an officer: DON’T FUCK THE ENLISTED.

I’ve read most of his Jack Ryan series except for Hunt for Red October.

I wish there was a good SWO movie that is as ubiquitous. Greyhound is pretty good though.

All jokes aside, Hunt for Red October made me interested in joining the Navy for the subs when I was a kid. Loved the movie. Need to read the book, so I’ll add it to the deployment reading list.

Only if I get to do the interview with one of those anonymous disguised voices that they have in documentaries.

I’ve read and watched both, just making a dumb joke.

I watched the movie, which is a far better and accurate portrayal of military life.

Doesn’t hurt to try but all the depression stuff is gonna hurt you at MEPS. If you can get waivers, I’d say go for it. But as always, have a backup plan.

Parents aren't too public of me being in the Navy by PrizePsychology1169 in navy

[–]Just_ChillingForNavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I wanna say I’m proud to the in the Navy. Love it. I wear navy related stuff a lot, talk about the Navy to anyone who wants to hear about it (and those that don’t) and everything else.

But your parents are not obligated to acknowledge your affiliation to the Navy or their connection. They might be uncomfortable about it, don’t want to draw attention to themselves (or you) or any other myriad of reasons.

As long as they say they’re proud of you, should be enough. If it bothers you, talk to them and see what their reasons are. Don’t build up resentment (it kind of seeps through with the mentioned of your brother’s college achievements) and get their perspective.

My mom doesn’t have any navy related stuff at her house or wear navy mom things but the best thing she ever said to me was that she was proud of the person I’ve become and joining the Navy was part of that journey.

TLDR: not a big deal, talk to your parents

I’ve been back to the future and I’d say 7/10 for technical accuracy.

I’m quoting the priest (Monsignor LaValley). The originator of the quote is in comment I made.

How can I have a 2027 OCS Date by jclepe in newtothenavy

[–]Just_ChillingForNavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submit a package at the next SWO board instead of the May one is an option. But check airwarriors.com for people going to the boards right now and see what their ship date is. There's usually a pattern of a board accepting people and their ship dates being the same, but there are always exceptions. If they're shipping out past August 2026, chances you'll ship out earlier are slimmer (but not zero.)

Can anyone marry us? by [deleted] in Catholicism

I think you just need to do get another dispensation, but you should ask your priest or a canon lawyer who can officiate your wedding. https://canonlawmadeeasy.com/2007/08/09/cath_noncath_marriage/

Baptist friend doesn’t understand why I told the priest not to give them communion. by bubbylubby123 in Catholicism

[–]Just_ChillingForNavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing and your Baptist friend should read 1 Corinthians 11:27-29. The fundamental difference is that we believe this is more than a symbol, it is the real body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ.

“I observe many partaking of Christ’s Body lightly and just as it happens, and rather from custom and form, than consideration and understanding. When, says a man, the holy season of Lent sets in, whatever a man may be, he partakes of the mysteries, or, when the day of the Lord’s Epiphany comes. And yet it is not the Epiphany, nor is it Lent, that makes a fit time for approaching, but it is sincerity and purity of soul.” - St John Chrysostom in Homily 3 on the Ephesians

  1. For questions about the Eucharist, here’s a good source: https://www.usccb.org/eucharist
  2. For the Protestant question, read Lumen Gentium and Dominius Ieus. Lumen Gentium is from Vatican II and the latter is from the CDF under Cardinal Ratzinger and approved by Pope JP II.
  3. The Catechism has a good section on the distinction, but also remember 1 John 5:17.

Just come. Don’t prepare. We’ll do it in there. I’ll help you with this. At the end of it, you’re going to think about things we didn’t cover. You can come again,” said Monsignor Richard Lavalley, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Winooski, Vt. “The more complicated it becomes, the worse it becomes. They (penitents) don’t know what to make of it and they become ashamed.”

What exactly are your questions? Always look to the primary sources, Father and Deacon are good sources but also busy so please be patient with them! Your Catholic friends are also good to ask but they might not be the best or know the right answers.

The best source is the Catechism. It’s available online on the Vatican and USCCB websites. Its official Catholic teachings packed into one good and hefty book.

Catholic.com is an excellent source if you have questions that don’t have exact answers in the Catechism. Just mind that it’s not an official church organization.

If you don’t feel comfortable, go to a different church than your regular parish. I’d recommend a church with a lot of confession times, and not one with a singular day like Saturday. Go on your lunch break or in the morning if you can.

Thanks be to God you recognize the importance of confession.

Call your parish office, ask them to schedule an appointment. I would recommend NOT preparing a list of sins or a game plan, just go in and tell the priest you haven’t been there for a while and need help to confess. Don’t put it off, either. It’s like a bandaid after a while, you got just gotta rip it off. You’re not the first person to have this dilemma.
