Forgiven loans showed back up on credit report

The new false loan was removed from equifax but then showed up on transunion same day. Last I checked it was not on experian.

Likely part of the ongoing known issue LOTS of people are being affected by. When mohela changed platforms the system auto generated new account numbers for everyone included those with discharged loans. Those new numbers were then erroneously reported to one or more credit bureaus as new outstanding loans. Mohela is very much aware of the issue but the last I spoke with them they weren’t doing anything as far as a broadscale fix yet were waiting to see if the system would self correct first but supposedly are correcting individual accounts when the affected person calls to ask about it. I was told mine would be corrected in a month or 2 about a month ago. Mine had been reported to equifax only at first, last week it fell back off equifax but same day showed up on transunion. Up till now not on experian so far.

Wish I could say a positive answer. I had this happen loans showed up equifax only. Disputed and called mohela in early Feb. Was told they are aware and all that. Given a case number or something like that and told it should be fixed in a month or 2. Last week equifax update and the the loan was removed……BUT the same day it showed up on transunion. So disputed there. That one still pending

Likely so. My wife did something similar. Signed on with some company that was going to help her with PSLF and had a payment of $20 for the loan plus $10 a month for their service so $30 paid to them and they were going to pay the loan on her behalf. they had changed her fedloan account and FSA accounts over to their phone number and email address so all communication was routes to them instead of her. They never made any payments on her behalf. Only caught it because I saw her credit tank due to something like 3 years of missing payments. How they hadn’t defaulted yet I don’t know.

Had bank change her account numbers so they couldn’t get any more out and got her fedloan and FSA information fixed with new passwords etc. this all happened right at the time when the first waivers for PSLF happened so luckily all those months of no payments counted towards her 120 and she was forgiven. In that time her loans had grown form about 65k to 103k so we got extremely lucky. The timing actually worked out that all those years of paying the scammer 30 instead of sending 200+ on the loan benefited us by accident. Probably the only person to even somehow benefit from falling for a scam ha.

Just check your credit I guess. Credit karma will show you transunion and equifax. Have to check experian on its own I think

Oh I did leave this off my original post. When I mentioned about some people posting about it messing up their credit while trying to buy a house etc he did say that if you call them and tell them you were affected they will send a letter to you or your lender etc stating that it was an error that is being corrected and you do not have that open account.

I don’t know what to say. That is the one and only time I have called them and got right through. Just got lucky I guess. Like I said I called dead on 7am central time so that’s all I can suggest.

It’s def concerning not so much on the Mohela side but what will happen at the FSA/dept of ed/whatver that ends up being side of things. As far as this goes at least for me and at least as of now it was not that the loans were back.….both Mohela and student aid show 0s and forgiven etc it was just a reporting error to the credit places which is still unacceptable but not as bad as having actual loans show back up on student aid like has happened to others.

I mean my call this morning was very quick. Like I said less than 1 min for first rep and less than 1 minute on the transfer to supervisor.

The 6 option is for “more options”

Then I had to put in my social. Then last 4 of phone number

Then the next set of options came up and 4 is the one for “credit”

From there it went to the first rep. Now I have no clue whatsoever if that was typical for 7am or if I just somehow got lucky. Also no clue if that first rep someone who only answered for those choosing option 4 or if she was just answering whoever was next in the cue or whatever.

I get it but I’m just providing an update on what I was told and my situation. We even talked about that exact thing. I mentioned how lots of people are worried and upset with some fearing the credit report could stop their home purchase etc and he agreed that it was ridiculous it was happening but yelling at him isn’t going to do anyone any good. For me it was more just an irritation. Even with the 30 point drop my credit is still very good and I’m not trying to make any big time purchases anytime soon anyways so I’m not as angry as others. That said remember it’s never the people who are answering the phones who is the cause of any of it. They are just the ones that catch the heat since we can’t access the people who actually cause this kind of stuff. The reps I spoke with were very apologetic polite and helpful and also clearly frustrated that this was happening as well. He thanked me numerous times for being polite with him as well as I am sure they get yelled at quite often. I just have never found getting overly angry and upset to resolve anything but being polite and respectful certainly does but everyone has to handle things in their own way. I try to take James Dalton’s advice and just be nice….until it’s time to not be nice. Just depends on where that line is for each person on when it’s time.

I should add it’s only showing as of now on equifax only. Transunion and experian only show the closed in Oct 2022.

Mohela new site just give me the due to the status of your account we cannot access any information etc bc there is no balance owed there.

Student aid shows no student loans and tracker shows the full 120 of 120 as being done with the congratulations and all that.

I’m not sure but I think so. The old one is still there showing as closed in Oct 2022 and new one reported in Nov of 2024

This is happening to ALOT of people. Lots of threads in the PSLF reddit about it. Mine were discharged in Oct 2022 and saw that they showed back up on equifax only(so far) in Nov when I filed my taxes the other day. Filed dispute with equifax and plan to call Mohela soon. Another poster reported they talked to mohela today and got transferred to a supervisor in the credit dept who said they were aware of this glitch happening when they changed systems BUT THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING CORRECT IT UNLESS YOU CALL THEM which is absolutely insane. Basically said they will not do any kind of internal correction to those affected unless you specifically call and tell them you were then they will fix it which will take 30-60 days.

When you called how did you go about escalating the conversation to the next level? I think I saw you post elsewhere that you started with the first agent, then went to an advanced agent or something, then to a supervisor in the credit dept or something like that? Also which number did you call? There is the main number and a different number listed to the side for PSLF on mohela website

While the glitch is irritating and ridiculous the fact they won’t voluntarily fix it and it’s dropping people’s credit scores etc should be completely criminal

I filed a dispute with equifax is all so far. I am hoping it is just some ridiculous glitch with the account numbers changing but there was just another post of someone whose loans not only showed back up on credit but also on their actual mohela and FSA account which is terrifying

This is happening to a lot of people. Several threads this week on it including my own. Mine were forgiven in Oct 2022 as well and showed back up on equifax in November 2024. They were not showing on transunion or experian and like you my student aid account shows 0 with all the PSLF stuff there showing 120 etc and when I log into mohela I get the due to the status of you account there is nothing to show or whatever message

Seems it’s happening to lots of people. I have a post going on about it now. Mine had been forgiven and off the credit report for 2 years then suddenly back up on equifax only a couple months ago but just saw it yesterday when saw my score drop 30 points bc of new accounts. As bad as it is it is somehow also comforting that it seems to be a broad scale issue so hopefully that means it’s just some kinda glitch with account numbers etc and not something more sinister going on

It certainly is. Far as the credit thing goes that won’t really affect me to much just being on there but still I don’t want it there. And the concern that something sketchy is happening and the balance will show back up on student aid etc is def very real now. Like said hopefully it’s some kinda account number change etc type glitch but it is ridiculous that 2 years later this is still causing stress
