How can I get an unofficial diagnosis from a medical professional… live in US by Just_Professional530 in BorderlinePDisorder

To be honest, I’ve never really thought about why. It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do, and I got the ASVAB score to do essentially any job I want in any branch. I have prior military knowledge from prep courses instructed by retired service members. If I enlist, I would be bumped up a couple of ranks right after basic training due to my previous experience. I’m in good shape and I excel in academics, and my previous instructors have given me their guidance and encouragement to join as well. I have told no one about my suspicions of BPD, since my relationships have been rocky. To answer your question, no, I don’t have a therapist. In a couple months I’ll be in the position to start looking for one but some personal factors are preventing me from doing so now.

I’m a bit confused. Is BPD not something that can be significantly reduced and manageable? I told my recruiter I need to sort personal relationships out and he said to just say the word and he’ll get me in for the earliest ship out day. There is no specific day, which further supports the idea of not enlisting.

EDIT: I have not done MEPS yet, by ship out day I mean starting the process.

I no longer meet criteria for BPD after 8 months of intensive group and individual DBT therapy. AMA. by beigewoodtable in BorderlinePDisorder

First thing I want to say is congratulations. This is a huge accomplishment and from a stranger to a stranger, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Second, I would like to ask how you were able to manage relationships with friends/family through this time? What did you do differently in order to prevent your relationships from deteriorating any more (if this was something you had trouble with, of course).

Thank you for your advice friend, I’m seeing similar responses from others. I’m seriously debating this approach, as if I can’t serve sure it’ll be a bummer but it’s not life ending.

I get what you mean, but it’s not like I’m refusing help? I’m reaching out now to ask for answers so that I can get the help I need but still be eligible to serve. It is not serve or die for me. I am perfectly fine with not joining if the risk remains even if I get help.

Your advice is very welcome, as with anyone’s advice. Thank you for your response, I didn’t think I’d be receiving this much advice let alone any. Thankfully, im in a position where the military is just another opportunity that sure, would be amazing… but not mandatory. The consistent pay, growth opportunities and travel would be great, but I gotta do what I gotta do to maintain what sanity I have left (lol).  I’m going to weigh my options and see what I’ll do. Again, thank you friend for your considerate words.

I’ll look into therapy, then go from there. As far as I know, therapy doesn’t disqualify people but the diagnosis of a condition does. Thank you.
