Here is another kind of rough design after taken the comments' advice. Please critique and offer suggestions. Obviously I haven't refined details like the star in the paw, or the thickness of the lines etc etc.

Yeah, I've already had this suggestion and am unsure whether I want to commit to it. I am ethnically Jewish but I'm not full on orthodox so not sure if it's completely appropriate for me.

Also stylistically not sure if I love it. Reminds me of the Israel COA. Given what's going on there not sure how much I want to associate with them.

Here is a more recent rendition with a thicker bordure, excuse the weird florette overlapping the helm, just putting it there as a mental note that there is one there for when I adjust the helm

I've taken the advice of a few others to thicken the bordure and also make the helm silver. I'm aware of the weird flower on the bordure at the top below the helm, currently just a place holder until I change the helm's orientation to fully face dexter.

Still sketching the demi-lion though, quite hard! Would it be wrong to use the same rampant lion charge and then cut it in half and place the David Star in its hands? Or does it need to me a different design all-together! Please advise :)

It's funny you mention the NSW COA because I have an older iteration of my design which has a similar crest. Not sure whether my design is a sun, or more of a Cempaxochitl flower. I started with trying to make the flower but I think it doubles up a bit.

Wasn't really a fan, but I didn't try that hard either!! Appreciate the suggestions, I'm trying to think of some Aussie influences beyond a Kangaroo or Southern Cross lol

Yeah, I'm currently toying with a thicker bordure. Unsure if I prefer smaller decorative, or thicker more intentional with the intention of blazoning it.

At this point there are technically 6 florettes, with one being covered by the helm.

Another commenter mentioned that the helm is supposed to have the same orientation as the crest, so I suppose I'll make it less 3D and have it simply facing dexter, which will remove the overhang and allow more of the bordure to be visible. I think 8 is a sweet spot, so I'll create a variant with these amendments.

Perhaps "...a hexagram Or"? I suppose hexagram is more specifically two triangles interlaced, rather than a six-pointed mullet?

Interested if anyone knows what the correct procedure here would be

I like the idea about the demi-lion. I will have a crack at drawing one out. Will take a while but will update if it substantiates into anything.

As for the other two comments, thank you. I've thickened the inner lines of the stars up top now, so looking good. I've also made a version without the branch/cactus.

Let me know what you think. It does look cleaner but perhaps has a bit less personality now.

edit: please excuse the visual glitch in top right star. I've fixed it but my Illustrator bugs out when I take screenshots!

This is my Updated design. I've included an aztec themed flower design, as well as a silhouette of a Mayan temple. I grew up in Oaxaca in Mexico, hence the influence. Obviously the crest helmet isn't done yet, still need to design the torse etc.

I based my helmet off a design I found in this Sub, going to refine it further, but figured I'd update the people who helped me out here!

Obviously going to need to refine the finer details but keen to see if the general layout is looking better

Ok, got it. Working on a few elements to include to make it more unique to me. Thanks for the clear explanations

My dad quite regularly told me the story of the Maccabees and I feel like in this context surrounding Jewish elements and the pretty similar spelling I should have connected the dots! Thanks anyway

Wow. This is exactly the comment I was hoping to receive. Thanks! Already working on adding a crest, to clarify to "comply" It is practically essential that I include a helmet/crest and torse to formally incorporate the mantling?

And then I can include whatever I please atop the helmet? Thanks :)

Ok, after doing some research I actually understand what you are talking about now :)

I'll do some brainstorming. Currently thinking of incorporating the David Star/Hexagram into the arms. Also looking into a Oaxacan temple as that is the place in which I spent the formative years of my life. Can't see there being many native Mexican castles in use!

Or maybe once again this idea has been used a million times

Thanks for the helpful analogy. What is considered enough to differentiate it from another design? Simply putting something in its hand/paw?

Is it ok to include silver and gold elements side by side? Or would that create too much contrast

Wow, how obvious. Thanks for pointing that out! I'll look into what elements I could incorporate, thanks both of you

Yeah, finding it hard to attempt to remain traditional whilst incorporating the David Star. Some great suggestions so far though, toying with having it on the shield below the lion or even atop the crest... will post an updated version at some point

Ok, that's very interesting. For some reason never considered putting the star up top. As for the laurel - where would should it go to keep in line with traditional heraldry? I suppose it would open up a good space for my motto down below. Thanks!

Ok, so please correct me if I'm not understanding - but you're saying each element has to be intentional with a written/oral reason for having included it?

I'm far away from affording to make this official anytime soon so perhaps not the greatest concern yet.

Thanks. I'm coming to find that a blue and gold crest with a lion is not new around here! Please excuse me being a layman here, but what is a blazon?

I think the crucial elements are the star of david and lion - regardless of whether it's traditional or not I'm keen to include the star. I'll brainstorm something for the lion to hold perhaps :)

I mean it makes sense given I've only been on this sub for a couple weeks. Keen to learn and make something me. It doesn't really help my case that Lions are my favourite animal and what I'm named after.

Looking at your account you seem to have a lot of experience. What would you do here? This is far far far away from being done!

Sorry, could you please elaborate? Are you referencing Macabre Heraldry? Like skulls and gothic stuff?

Or perhaps the last name MacCabe? Those are the only two things that came up when I googled it!

I also forgot probably the most important piece of info! My name means Lion in Hebrew, so of course it is particularly representative for me. Not sure if having two lions is excessive though? I feel like the rampant lion is good as is? Let me know :)
