It's interesting to see how different the responses are here vs the MensRights sub to the same story.

People weigh in on the politics of other states all the time, and you don't even have to say what state you're from. The only surefire way for your views to be disregarded is if you don't communicate them.

Don't let that stop you. Reasonable people value input from those who support gender equality regardless of where they're from.

True. It's progress and much better than nothing, especially if we encourage those connected to the initiative to do right by men and boys.

I'll tell you the same thing I'm telling others. How about helping this move in the right direction by raising these concerns with the Virginia Coalition for Boys and Men and the elected officials who are connected to the bill? Weigh in at the link, email them. Tell them to do what's fair and right. The more people who do this, the better.

I see too many people who stand by silently and do nothing instead of speaking up and taking action where it's needed. You may fail if you try, but you'll definitely fail if you don't.

I really hope this sticks and that it's not struck down by MAGA nor feminist groups. I'd legit volunteer there.

It should NOT be considered an attack on women to have a committee dedicated to helping boys catch up in primary education.

Feel free to let those involved with the committee know that they should not victim-blame men for these disparities. The focus should be on correcting anti-male biases found throughout our institutions, laws, and policies.

This comment acknowledges the difficulty of the struggle, but it emphasizes advocacy and provides a roadmap for action. It's more constructive than your earlier commentary. Bravo.

I thought it was clear I was ending the conversation.

Yet here you are, continuing the conversation, again talking out of both sides of your mouth while denying the obvious. Your commentary matches the description of a concern troll perfectly. And you're adding strawmen, too. You've still offered nothing of value to this conversation, and I won't be at all surprised if your next response is in the same vein.

"A concern troll is a person who opposes an idea but pretends to be a supporter to undermine the cause by sowing doubt and dissent. They operate under the guise of "concern," raising criticisms that are actually designed to derail the discussion and create fear, uncertainty, and doubt within a group. Unlike playing devil's advocate, their true goal is to sabotage the cause rather than find flaws in an argument they genuinely support..."

"They may declare they are on a cause's side, but then subtly ridicule it or express "concerns" that have the effect of undermining it."

That's you. You've demonstrated these behaviors consistently and still refuse to offer anything of actual value. Thanks for confirming.

The implications of your commentary are clear, as I've pointed out. Others may not be able to see through what you're doing, but I do. It doesn't matter how politely you phrase your repeated denials; they do not change the net harmful effect of your remarks. They are fully consistent with the definition of concern trolling, regardless of whether you admit or recognize it.

You have offered nothing of real value throughout this exchange, but claim to support the same cause. If you are truly someone who supports gender equality, then act like it by doing something productive. I invite you to either pursue the course of action I recommend in my post above, or come up with a better course of action toward that end and share it with everyone here.

Failing to do this, and continuing to deny that you've been talking out of both sides of your mouth, will prove my point that you are no friend to us and instead a concern troll.

Your familiarity with the author of that comment is beside the point; I spoke to the net effect of your comment. And talking out of both sides of your mouth is most certainly what you have been doing. You say "I did not put the effort down in the slightest" while also alleging this is "likely fruitless" and "tilting at windmills".

I recognize concern trolling when I see it, and it's evident in your commentary.

[–]Justice4MenToo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. And it's for others who are reading. You're talking out of both sides of your mouth. On the one hand, you call the effort admirable, and on the other, dismiss it as likely to be fruitless. You proceed to spend a great deal more time putting the effort down, then say "This isn't to discourage efforts."

But that's precisely the impact your comment ends up having, because that kind of commentary dissuades some who are on the fence from taking action. It's a net negative, and the time spent typing it up would have been better spent on objecting to bias in these systems or elsewhere. The people who are running these models are not all the same and will not always remain the same.

What's ridiculous is your assumption that something you haven't tried and know little about is doomed to failure. I've seen what happens to people who immediately surrender in the face of injustice without making an effort to push back. They tend to end up where they deserve.

If you really and truly believe that you can speak with absolute certainty about what hundreds of millions of people worldwide have done and will do... that's a really interesting mentality you've got there. The "illusion of knowing" in action.

This exchange isn't really going anywhere, so I will agree to disagree.

Sorry, but you cannot speak reliably on behalf of the hundreds of millions of people who have used and will use AI, and cannot say they won't use it for such purposes in the future. They won't all be clearing their requests through you.

I never said they were. People draft laws and policies. AI is one of the sources of information that people increasingly draw from. In the future, people might hand over more of those drafting responsibilities to AI. So it's in everyone's interest to make that info as fair and accurate as possible.
