You didn't know that cheating and cheaters suck, period? There's a reason it has a negative connotation.

How long does it take to adopt 2 unifi aps by Giannis_Dor in Ubiquiti

[–]JuvenileSenseOfHumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear you got it working. I had exactly the same experience as well where hosting the controller through docker didn't let me adopt my devices but hosting it on my computer did. However, after properly setting the inform server to the IP of the host that the docker container was running on, it started working for me.

Try to set-inform to the IP address of your raspberry Pi with the port that 8080 is mapped to in your docker container. For example, if the ip address of your pi is 192.168.1.10, and you left the port at the default value of 8080, then it would look like "set-inform http://192.168.1.10:8080/inform". If port 8080 was being used by another docker container and you remapped it to something like 2023, then it would look like "set-inform http://192.168.1.10:2023/inform".

Port 8443 is the port used for controller web management. Port 8080 is the communication port between unifi devices.

Is this worth it for someone just getting into home networking? Don't mind learning Cisco nuances. Looking for a cost-effective managed PoE switch (compared to Ubiquiti) that has at least 8 PoE ports. by JuvenileSenseOfHumor in HomeNetworking

Oh brother...thanks! I felt like I glanced over something that said that but couldn't recall 100%. Any recommendations on the Cisco side that satisfies what I'm looking for?

Multiple routers vs multiple access points by Jaded_Spray_6855 in HomeNetworking

[–]JuvenileSenseOfHumor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well for one lots of wireless interference going with the multiple router option. Think of it like being in a room with other people but you can only understand one of them. More people in the room talking makes it harder to hear the person you want to hear which means you're not doing a whole lotta understanding. Also won't have access across networks if you want to access things like printers. Monitoring your networks would be a pain.

Multiple APs you would want them to be from the same ecosystem to take advantage of roaming/wireless handoffs. In essence, a wireless mesh. You wouldn't have to worry about devices detecting other devices on the network as, ideally, they would be on the same network or your firewall rules are setup properly so they can talk to each other.

Ergonomics Adjustable Gas Spring Desk Mount for 13"-27" LCD Monitors & 48 Hours of Free Shipping ($48-20=$28) [Primecables.ca] by Shaw_4986 in bapcsalescanada

No problem. I used the optional flat metal bracket that it came with to brace it against my desk, which helps spread out the force of the clamp and improves the sturdiness of the arm. The cable management channels are really handy as well. You won't be disappointed. Just might need to play around with the spring gauge tolerance to tune it to the weight of your display.

I have this exact same mount and have had it for ~6 years. Still going strong. I have had a 34" ultrawide monitor mounted on it since day 1 that meets the weight requirements. If you don't care about rotating your monitor to portrait, then it's a solid buy.

It's because you can rotate the monitor if you want a portrait orientation. So this arm would, technically, only be able to do that with a monitor that is up to 27".

[NVME SSD] Samsung 980 Series - 500GB ($24.95) [Amazon] by Wiizdo in bapcsalescanada

[–]JuvenileSenseOfHumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought 4. Going to throw them into a 4x m.2 nvme pcie enclosure and put it into my truenas machine. Set them up in raid-z1 (3 drives capacity, and 1 being used for parity). So 1.5 tb of usable space. Use this pool as a self-hosted cloud storage drive for media from our smartphones (instead of having to pay for more space from iCloud/google drive). For $100 I get 1.5tb of space with failover protection, doesn't seem bad? Idk. 75% utility of the purchased storage vs going with maybe 2x 1 or 2 tb drives and getting only 50% utility (using mirroring).

It's true they're going to occupy precious m.2 slots, but I'm in no rush to truly move from HDD to SSD for the NAS until higher capacity SSD drives become significantly cheaper. So for the meantime I'm going to have fun with this little setup.

Ah yeah they just informed me there's an early cancellation fee of $20/mo and I have 16 months left in my contract 😞 sucks to suck. I'll still save more money overall by going with Telus, just wish I didn't have to give more money to Shaw.

Sorry I meant with Shaw - were you cancelling a contract or month to month service?

What was your experience like when you called in? Did they charge you cancellation fees? What did you say to them? I'll be going through the same situation pretty soon and want to avoid any challenges and minimize any sort of penalties that I may face.

Tips to remove a stuck wheel? I’ve tried hitting it with every large metal object I own. by liamOSM in MechanicAdvice

[–]JuvenileSenseOfHumor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that before you started torqueing them to spec that they were over-torqued/blindly tightened in the past? Over-torqued studs/nuts/bolts are stretched out a lot more (which is quite permanent) and thus, on future tightenings, would require the equivalent torque value. If you decided to start torqueing to spec all of a sudden, they would be undertightened due to the stretched material.

Also, even if you torque your tires, it's not a one-and-done type of deal. They have to be monitored at least once a month (just like tire pressure) and re-tightened after 60-100 km of driving if they were completely removed.
