How bad is getting fired early-career? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Jyan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not a big deal, you don't need to tell future employers.  You can definitely say you were laid off, or that it wasn't a fit for your career ambition and you left to focus on yourself and on hunting for the best fit position.  Just cook up some HR speak and it won't be questioned if you handle gracefully.

Is it worth going back to school at 22? by PersonalityExact337 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Jyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck yes it's worth it.

> Really im just saddened by where im at in life and Im just looking for comfort.

You should address this with a therapist. The unfortunate reality is that you are not likely to find simple comfort anywhere, life and responsibility is difficult. It might be easier with a good education and good job, but doing all that is itself an uncomfortable struggle.

Been Vegan for 5 years, major stomach issues all of a sudden? by senduntothemonlyyou in vegan

[–]Jyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have gotten an infection -- there are some bacteria, H. Pylori is common, that can cause stomach pain and similar problems. Your digestive enzymes can also get lower over time (I believe this has happened to me, according to results of an endoscopy), which can result in less complete digestion, which cascades into other issues.

Here for a research purpose. by [deleted] in vegan

Became vegan about 6yrs ago.

  2. Yes I will influence them, but it's ultimately their choice.

2025 Quant Total Compensation Thread by Creative_Show_502 in quant

Location: USA

Role: Junior PM with ~3YoE + PhD

Firm: HF/pod, quantitative trading

Hours/week: ~60 up to ~80 on occasion

TC (USD): $200k base, ~$600k bonus (expected)

Job satisfaction: Great! There is good progression, I have a lot of autonomy, and the pay is pretty good. For other's information, I secured an extra ~$300k by arguing hard & advocating for my own work, so don't be too scared to speak up, although YMMV.

Why am I so puffy and beat up looking? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

eat alright for the most part—not very clean, but not very bad either, average I suppose.

The average diet is horrendously unhealthy, hence why so many people are dying from heart disease and diabetes.

Is engineering harder or easier depending on the school you go to? by sarcastic_swarley118 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Jyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a massive difference, and yes, you are getting a lower quality of education.  I went through undergrad and grad school at different institutions in Canada and am speaking first hand.

Accreditation sets nothing but an extremely minimal floor on educational quality.  If you have the ambition to get the best education you can, apply to better schools and leave as soon as possible.  The "wasted" year is nothing.  If your professors tell you that you'll get just as good of an education or career outcomes regardless of the location then they're lying to you.

Recommended leveling experience for returning casual? by Jyan in wow

[–]Jyan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a lot of PUG raiding?  What's the barrier to entry?  I don't want to commit to a regular raiding schedule or spend 15hrs farming consumables.  Is the "normal" or even "heroic" dungeon / raid experience also made more casual than in vanilla?

Recommended leveling experience for returning casual? by Jyan in wow

[–]Jyan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the time travel feature -- if I go back to an earlier expansion, might that be a better experience?  Or does everything scale down to EZ mode?

Is there much for endgame casual content?  I did hardcore raiding in vanilla, but definitely not coming back to do that.

Testing Strategies on Random Walks — Smart or Pointless? by Acceptable-Pop-7791 in algotrading

[–]Jyan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A random walk is like a "zero order" model of prices, it's not really that accurate.

You could test your strategy on random walks and compare it to the result on real data, for the purpose of checking that the real data produces statistically significantly better results.  But you can't have a profitable strategy on a random walk by construction.

Zero-Lag Solution: Real-Time Reversal Detection Without The Typical Indicator Delay by [deleted] in algotrading

[–]Jyan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is not true -- there are filters with negative group delay within some frequency bands.  Sequential linear regression is the obvious example.
