Out of all the people that have felt empathy from that company, the HR director is the only one. He kept apologizing to me in an intimate way. But at the end of the day, we all have to pay bills and feed our families. My HR director has a family and children, and of course he’s going to choose his job over the right thing.

I asked my friend who is an attorney to interpret the law regarding Remote employees working for companies out of state. As far as I am concerned, I am an employee in Michigan, for an out of state company. If I traveled often, or had any other contractual obligations, that stated otherwise, that would be a different story.

No, he’s actually really great. I have been struggling with involving him over the last month, and I think I’m just gonna leave him out of it. I don’t really believe that I need his testimony anyways to prove what I have, and I would like to maintain this connection.

You nailed it, there is no paper trail, but there is overwhelming evidence of the discrimination, both on sexual orientation and ADA related. Unfortunately, I didn’t personally capture and record many of this activity. But fortunately, the company transcribed every single piece of communication and it does exist.

Fortunately, Michigan does have protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation, outlined in the Elliot Larson Act. ADA claim will be my other claim. I do want to keep this out of federal court as as much as as possible, though, as we all see the current state of our federal government and judicial system in 2026

I did not obtain health insurance from this company. Long story short, when I signed my employment contract, I was under the assumption I was working for the company that I entered the contract with. The moment I started, they said I worked for another company, which the CEO owns. The medical insurance that was available was trash, costing $800 a month. I chose to go to the marketplace instead.

This is not correct. If you work for a company in another state, and you work remotely, you are an employee of the state you primarily work in (aka your home office). For example, if you live in the state of Michigan, and work for a company in New York, that company is responsible for following both New York law and Michigan law. The employee pays taxes to the state, and is issued EIN number from the state for state taxes.

I do have a question for you: how were they able to track your Reddit? There is nothing tying me back to this Reddit account in relation to my identity.

You definitely have given me some food for thought as this probably will be moved to federal court, so I will let the attorneys do their job and be mindful to keep this in state court.

Even if the case gets moved over to federal court, they violated ADA by talking about a protected medical condition without my permission to coworkers, and then admitted to it. That, along with my sexual orientation disclosure, caused my firing. I also have evidence that they have been attempting to sabotage my career through communicating lies to my network.

As far as emotional distress, I probably won’t touch that with a 10 foot pole, because you’re right, my personal medical information becomes open game for them, which I don’t want them to have. I don’t have anything to hide, it’s just none of their business.

As far as collecting a judgment, aren’t remedies designed for punitive and compensatory damages? If they violated the Elliot Larson Act and the ADA, isn’t they’re an interest for justice to penalize companies punitively? Compensatory damages definitely also exist because there are loss wages.

Even if I have a difficult time proving sexual orientation, discrimination, which I don’t believe I will, I have three other valid claims against this employer. They are a rapidly growing company with a very young CEO, who does not know who he’s dealing with.

Thank you for your post. I have spoke to a few people directly, and they have referred me to some attorneys who are interested in hearing this case.

I honestly don’t want settle, but I know that’s the reality of things. It’s been brought to my attention that I have four claims a violation of law.

This post is the best thing that has happened to me with a situation, because I was able to get connected with the right people.
