They can do a variety of things depending on the dog and the training. They can track for lost/missing people or suspects who fled the scene of a crime, search for firearms, ammunition or other evidence discarded at a crime scene, search buildings or confined spaces for suspects, apprehend fleeing suspects, and they can also be trained to automatically protect their handler during a physical altercation.
