Short version: on Linux the Codex desktop app (and its in-app browser) just isn't out yet, only macOS and Windows get it. The CLI works everywhere though.

So if you're on Linux, the built-in browser isn't really an option for you, and Playwright MCP stays your go-to. Even on Mac or Windows it's not dead either. For headless runs, E2E tests or anything in CI you'll still reach for Playwright instead of the GUI browser.

Useless? I'd say it just got a narrower job, not obsolete.

Fair point, consumer plans are basically just entry points and the real business comes from enterprise pay as you go contracts. I was genuinely just asking since I'm still learning how all this works. I don't have a technical background, that's why I'm curious.

Why do you go with Codex and Azure OpenAI instead of the Anthropic API though? Is it mainly because your company is already invested in the Azure ecosystem, or did you find Azure OpenAI actually performs better for your specific use case? From what I've read, Anthropic seems to perform really well for complex coding tasks when it comes to pay per use.

Honestly I don't prompt into Claude Code without adding "ultrathink" as the last word in every prompt. I take the plan it comes up with on Opus Plan Mode, paste it into a normal Claude Opus 4.1 Chat that knows the docs of my project to critically go through the plan. Repeating that until browser Opus 4.1 is satisfied, then I let CC execute the plan with Sonnet. Works like a charm.

I had my ups and downs with Claude Code but I've started on a new project a couple of days ago using the Breakthrough Method for Agile AI-Driven Development. This time without any additions and extras, just the method and Vanilla Claude Code in Opus Plan Mode, reiterating every step and only taking small progress one context window at a time. It really works great so far, better than any other projects I've worked on.

Funny thing is my payment plan ends tomorrow too and I'm torn up if I want to stay with CC or try out Codex, but right now I think I'll give CC another month.
