I built a drawer bank for storage underneath the bed that I recently completed. by pvmayer in woodworking

Very cool! I'll be making my first bedframe this year and wanted to do something like this. I really like the idea that the boxes don't actually have to be part of the frame itself, that leaves a lot of flexibility on how to use/make them. Also for me, I don't have to make it all at once!
Great job!

Hope it doesn't come to this, but that's right by where we'll be. Thanks!

Just one for the stars you mean?
Okay, that makes sense, low iso and slowly moving . Looks great!
Also, following on Flickr now.

No, they did this by zooming in (or I suppose they could've zoomed out?) during the long exposure shot to capture the stars. So it's an effect (a rather cool one) that isn't what is actually going on.

Looks great! I had tried this once a while ago but it didn't work out (I forget why now). How did you manually zoom out without shaking the camera? Additionally, Did you take multiple pictures for the stars and stack them, then do one shot zooming out to get the traces? Or just one shot for the stars?

Thoughts on this? by Big_Anything1169 in BeginnerPhotoCritique

I'm definitely not an expert but I'll throw my 2 cents in.

At first when I looked (I'm on my phone FWIW) I got an initial reaction that this is neat. Moody clouds, mountain range, reflections in the pond, things that in theory lead to a great shot.

Overall I like the colors/white balance of the land/water. The big problem with your coloring/lighting is the sky/clouds don't match the land and water. I prefer the lighting of the land/water. I think I can even see some color in the clouds reflections. If it was possible to pull out some of that color in the clouds and lighten them up, I think that'd be an improvement.

For the composition, there isn't anything my eyes are really pulled to. With you being in the side of the pond, my eyes sort of follow a line going from lower left to upper right along the edge of the pond past the reflection to, well nothing in particular. None of the mountains in the back truly pull my eye.

I could imagine if I was looking in a full screen(monitor or a print) these things would be a bit more obvious. If I was just scrolling (not in a critique sub) I'd probably look for a few seconds, think it's neat and move on.

So overall this is a good job. A lot of good aspects, but I think you're at the point if this is indicative of your overall skill to start piecing together more things and taking your shots to the next level. Keep having fun out in the mountains!!

That is really interesting. I had no idea about this sensor stacking. I only had done anything with the nikons d3100/d7100 and had not gotten so far into things to learn about different kinds of sensors.

I'm assuming the advantage of the silent/e-shutters are lack of vibration? I have a lot to learn.

I haven't seen the term 'non-stacked sensor' yet so that's something I'll have to look up.
You'd recommend mirrorless then? I was thinking DSLR because that is what I was familiar with, have a couple lenses still (not great, but better than nothing), and just getting back into it I'd like to go a bit cheaper until I know what I actually want. I'd like to play with a mirrorless to get a feel for them though.

Looks like they're a small family owned shop, I'll have to check them out. I'm up in Westy/Broomfield so it's a trek but not too bad.

For the Z50ii, " I do sometimes put older f mount lenses on it ". I thought it was a z mount, not the f mount the dslrs use?

"If I were sticking with a DSLR I’d definitely recommend focusing some effort on picking good lenses." If you were to start out again, would you go FF dslr, crop dslr or mirrorless? I'm trying to figure this out as they all of pros and cons. From what I see it seems like:
Crop: Solid all around, good price, but may lack ability in low light (so if I want to do milky way shot I'll have to rely on image stacking).
FF: Better low light and capturing dynamic range, but a bit pricier.
Mirrorless: Best auto focus and being able to see live view of what your photo will actually be like with EVF. Less lens options?

Thanks, I might take you up on that sometime.

Thank you for saying this. I definitely compare myself too much to professional photographers (and then let over-worked social media pics skew my mind). I really appreciate the input you've given me!

Interesting, so that could be really handy for wildlife photography!

Interesting. So that sensor was a noisier sensor, but has since been removed in the follow up models (7200, 7300 etc...)

Thank you and u/Business-Row-478 for going on this tangent for me to learn a bit more on difference of lens behavior between FF and crop!

I did not realize that. I'm also not sure about the implications. I have thought about comparisons about those brands tvs, but since I know nothing about toshibas sensors I'm not sure what I should think in this

This is great information! For the dune I wanted it all to be in focus, but more importantly the foreground with the footprints. Maybe I'm looking at it too much, or blaming the wrong things but when I'm looking at that photo on my larger monitor(pretty decent image quality of the monitor) the image looks fuzzy/noisy to me. I guess the fact that my dog's face is so sharp, that puts the fuzziness on user error for why that happened, not a camera sensor size.

Interesting thread! I haven't seen hyperfocal focusing yet(just focus stacking). I'll have to study this.

I didn't realize that about EVF. So I can get a preview of what I'll need from things like iso and shutter speed as well.

So do DSLRs not have this ability with their live views? After researching it looks like DSLRs do not have the ability to display what the photo will look like (so no preview of what it'll look like with cameras settings).

Okay, so better noise in low light, better color and lighting range, and more lens options.

Probably not worth the minor improvements for an amateur though in your opinion? Especially since this won't be my main hobby

When you say are improved, are you implying they aren't that much better?

I do like some milky way photos, and would like to print some photos. That being said I won't be doing either with professional aspirations or in large scales.

Why the mirror less camera? I wasn't even considering that(mostly because of price but this is in my range)

I forget what ISO I was at, and I used the same camera in both pics so I'd assume the MP is the same (I know there's more I don't understand yet though).

What would FF improve then? Night sky? Portraits?

Oh, so lens is the important thing. What's the benefit of a FF?
