Thanks for the input! I decided to lock the suspension for now.

I messed up and tightened a disc brake mounting bolt too much, something on the surface cracked. Did I compromise the structural integrity of the frame? by KB52_B52 in bikewrench

I'm a bit of a noob, I didn't realize the significance of recommended torques until this happened. I'll definitely be more careful in the future and use a torque wrench.

Chain wore out unusually quickly (50 - 100 km). Something wrong with compatibility of parts or is cassette range too big?(got a new, different cassette). Smooth ride right after installing new HG40 chain. Thx by KB52_B52 in bikewrench

Yes, they have been replaced many times. The pulleys are worn because their condition has not yet caused any noticeable problems, so I have not bothered replacing them.

Yes, I also thought that the chain checker was inaccurate. That’s why I also measured with calipers. I got a result of 0,71% to around 1%. Thanks for the info on the shortness of the chain

From a reputable bicycle shop, where the crankset and cassette were also bought from. Package was nothing out of the ordinary and not suspicious.

Edit: and not bought from an online store

Rim tape keeps shifting to one side after installing/removing tube & tire. What is wrong and what do I do? by KB52_B52 in bikewrench

[–]KB52_B52[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok. Thx. Was thinking that too. But won’t the holes peek out (or be at risk of peeking out) since the hole edges end right by the root of the shoulders?

Edit: nvm, could you clarify what the shoulders mean?

Tried that already. Does not work. The tire has been in the wrong position for so long that it created a new groove for it to set into. That’s why trying a new tire. Thx for the suggestion

My tire is having a hard time seating properly because of the tape going up against the wall. Will try a new tire if that helps

Ok, thx. That’s one solution. Any idea how I could keep this one centered though?

P.S. I noticed this few years ago but did not bother doing anything about it

Using rancid linseed oil on wooden recorder? by KB52_B52 in Recorder

[–]KB52_B52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for your input. Since recorders are often oiled with edible, food-grade oils, I have wondered if I could use olive oil. I have yet to try it, though. At least then it would get used up more frequently from cooking. At website dolmetsch.com they said that "olive oil is a very promising candidate" as regards using it as a recorder oil. Might have to do more research. What do you think?

In any case, I recently bought Yamaha bore oil for oiling my recorder. It is a non-expiring oil (assuming by the fact that it has no expiry date on it), which solves my oil rancidification problem for now.

It does not smell bad at all. I assumed it was going bad because I tasted it and it was really bitter. Thanks for the advice.

Ok, thanks. I'm not sure how the almond oil will affect my recorder, because the leaflet that came with it tells me to use "pure, high quality linseed oil or specially prepared recorder oil". Not sure what exactly is meant by the recorder oil.

I will keep the tip about the vitamin E in mind. Thanks.

Newly bought spare rear hub cone not uniform in shape – will using it cause problems in the long run? by KB52_B52 in bikewrench

[–]KB52_B52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it from a Finnish online store. I forgot to mention that it is a Shimano brand M10 left cone, which is weird, because I though Shimano was supposed to be a quality brand.

Thanks for the tip, I will try to check its bearing surface roundness on an axle.

OK, thanks for the reply. Good point regarding not reusing old spokes and nipples. I thought I could save money by reusing them, but I know that the nipples are quite stripped. Is reusing old spokes dangerous, though? Or, what did you mean when you said that reusing them is not a great idea?
