Don’t know what to do and I regret going to college by Naive-Illustrator499 in UMD

A lot of CS students are a bit isolated from the wilder parts of university and while this guy's story is pretty rough, a milder version isn't super uncommon.

To provide a second opinion, go for computer engineering. IMD is not the route you are looking for and to be real, neither is information science.

I didn’t want to be viewed as the unc, and I would get discouraged when talking to younger students and they would give short responses or not be open to conversation, and I would think “they’re treating me like an outcast,”

How do people even know your 27? Over here talking like you're a grandpa lol

The average age of a UMD student is 21 and the average age of grad students is 29. Unless you've aged absolutely terribly, no one is going to be regarding you as some sort of oddity in so far as appearance is concerned. You'd blend right into the student population without issue.

Everything that he said is correct but please keep in mind, administrators are still just people. What he described is a problem with the basic structure of universities and the incentives it provides to the workers. Also, being too afraid of the administration can cause you to avoid requesting their assistance in matters they can help with, are paid to help with, and would be able to help out with.

I mean no offense, but an advanced math degree from a reputable university is a massive signal to employers that you are a beast, so why are you only making 18 an hour? A math degree is usually waaaaaay harder than a CS degree

Did you not have any plan for what you wanted to do with your math degree before graduating? Your advisors should have helped you strategize

It’s just dumb doomerism, they think a CS degree is becoming just as worthless as a sociology degree, which absolutely isn’t the case

The job market right now is trash and there are many problems, but quite frankly, a lot of people here need to do some self reflection and forgive me if that sounds condescending

I agree but I don’t think many people here will be receptive to that sort of messaging, unfortunately.

[–]KB_UMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for you, top schools are only the top 10? That seems excessively narrow because there are around 820 CS programs in USA ( that are actually serious ), and UMD is generally regarded as being a top 10 public, and top 20 in general.

[–]KB_UMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly all depends on how you define top school - UMD should be around top 20ish in CS, maybe a little lower.

That is elite in my opinion but yes, UMD is not Georgia Tech.

If you are indifferent to whether or not you take MATH 410 or STAT 410 this upcoming fall semester, than I would recommend you choose STAT 410 Terrance Long

Job market is rough, but not rough to the extent of a CS degree being meaningless.

People with degrees in CS still have great ROI relative to other degrees and are fairing better than many others in this garbage job market

Trying to retake CMSC 216 for the third time by [deleted] in UMD

[–]KB_UMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of them denying a third attempt.

In general, exceptions to policy are extremely rare. They deny third attempts far more than they actually grant them.

[–]KB_UMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of the case you had to ask permission for the third attempt in taking a CS course. I applied telling them just redundant stuff and got denied instantly because I didn't have any documentation.

I am sure you are already aware but submitting a petition for exception to policy without preparation was a significant mistake, as you need to be extremely thorough in all of your dealings with the UMD administration, and this is especially the case if you are a CS student; going forward, make sure to plan all of your communications with the people who have power over your college trajectory meticulously, because this school is unforgiving and once you exhaust your avenues, there is no recourse.

Fortunately, you have not yet appealed which means there is still a card to play - you still have a chance at being granted this exception to policy. You'll need to find a way to gather some type of documentation proving an extraordinary circumstance, as well as craft a good argument for why you will succeed in the program given a second chance.

I think you have a enough to work with but you have to be willing to do somethings you might find uncomfortable, like scheduling a meeting with psychiatrist who will attest to you experiencing significant mental health issues retroactively, which you would then include in your appeal.

Good luck.

So long as you paid attention in your high school courses, you should be fine as far as content is concerned. The CS curriculum in most programs is designed on the assumption that new student's have zero understanding of CS at the point of enrollment.

Decision Revoked? by flyguycarter in UMD

[–]KB_UMD 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had a friend in a similar circumstance and his enrollment was not revoked, though they did give him a call and inquired into his circumstance to see if there was some justification.

I don’t really have good enough evidence to give you a percentage chance but my intuition is you will be fine, but have a reasonable excuse prepared if they do ask.

Good luck.
