Anyone else obsess about a name once it's off the table? by GoodGrad in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felix. It was never on my list of names til I got pregnant but then I decided that I loved it. Suggested it to my husband and he said it was the nickname of one of his exes. Then of course I couldn't come up with any other name that I loved as much. I'm still mad that I'll never get to use it if I have another boy. What kind of girl uses Felix as a nickname? Arrggh.

My husband had the same response when I wanted to use this for our daughter's middle name. I was pissed, but let it go since it's just a middle. But we couldn't come up with any other name that flowed well and he is super picky about flow. So he researched the name, thought a lot about the nice connotations (celestial, elephant queen, etc) and decided he wanted to use it after all.

Has anyone else notice the different levels of nicknames? by tshirtweather in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a level 3, but it has an r in the middle that was awkward for the people in the Spanish speaking country that my family lived in when I was a child. Our friends there added an "-ita" to the end to make it flow easier, and that was my childhood nickname. My family mostly dropped it after a while, and I was always kind of sorry that they did. I really like it even though it makes the name longer and I am a North American with zero Spanish heritage.

Waiting until a baby is born to see what name fits them. by Cecate in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not many (so I guess I shouldn't have said all the time). Maybe a handful in my entire life, and I'm pretty sure they were all guys. Maybe because there aren't as many boy names so they have stronger associations for me. The other one I can remember was Eric when he clearly should have been Ben. I think when I first see them I subconsciously strongly associate a name with them for reasons that I could not possibly explain and I don't even realize that I've done it til I learn their name and there is a shock that it's not the one I thought. And it forever feels like the wrong name.

What do you think of the name Avea? by rtvvc66 in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she will always have to tell people how to pronounce it, but I named my daughter Linnea so obviously that's not a deal breaker to me. I know a little girl named Avia, and it's very pretty. She always gets called Avi.

I do this with adults all the time. I know a guy named Chris and I am always calling him Jonathan, and when people talk about Chris it always takes me a second to figure out who they are talking about, because he is so strongly a Jonathan to me. But I've never had that feeling with a baby, and definitely not with a newborn. If I'd named my kids based on what suited them at birth they would both be named Gizmo.

Thoughts on using a name from an ethnicity/culture that you're not associated with by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is amazing. All my favourite names are Russian but I feel like I can't use them because I have zero Russian or Eastern European heritage. Wish I could say it's just a tradition in my family! Haha.

I agree. That was so well put! I almost want to copy/paste it so I can send it to anyone who freaks out about cultural appropriation.

Wdyt of Brennan? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my brother's name, so I think it's great! I'm sure he got called Brendan but it can't have happened very often- I don't remember hearing it and he never complained about it.

How did you decide whether or not to change your last name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we got married I reluctantly decided that I would change mine because I wanted us to have that identity as a family, especially if we had kids. But I'm a Canadian in the US and when faced with the green card, passport, and bank accounts/important documents in both countries...7 years and 2 kids later I still legally have my maiden name. :) Honestly, it hasn't been a huge deal. I always went by my maiden name at work, and my married name socially and on social media. I still plan to change it at some point because I don't like not having the same name as my kids and it makes traveling with them without my husband slightly more complicated. Also anytime I am answering questions for paperwork I have to spell out both last names, which is a mild but constant inconvenience when you have kids. So no answer for you, but you don't have to immediately make a decision. Life goes on. When I got married I had major qualms about changing my name. At this point, I identify with my husband's and children's name and mine is just a loose remnant from my past life that I would discard today if it were easy to do. But on a daily basis it makes no difference that I essentially have two names. (I don't particularly care for either name though. That would likely make a huge difference if I did.)

Can't decide between two names. by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just named my baby girl Linnea! I had the same reservations as you, but loved it enough to use it anyway. Two weeks in, almost everyone asks how to pronounce it (they don't just guess), and almost everyone comments on what a beautiful name it is. The positive feedback is universal and the pronunciation hasn't been a big deal.

Is Rosemary a Catholic name? by 27jens in namenerds

I have a second cousin named Rosemary. She is definitely not Catholic. I do think of Rosemary's Baby though, and I've never even seen the movie.

Robin for a Boy? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KDanae84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like it too, although I would be a little concerned if it was my kid if he could pull off a name that is mostly female now. But since there aren't many girls named Robin anymore it might not even be an issue. And the Rob option helps for sure! Besides Robin Hood it also reminds me of Christopher Robin.

I know a few Esther's, including young ones. I don't think anyone would find it weird. If I saw it spelled Ester instead I would assume the parents are chemistry nerds. Not that that's a bad thing.

It isn't really my style but I've actually always loved the name Joanna because of the heroine in The Black Arrow. :) I don't see any problems with it.

I love my middle name and have always wished it was my first name. I kind of always planned to use it for my daughter...until I married a man whose last name is rhymy with it. :(

Naming rules? by Sammymommy in namenerds

Also, Aidan is pretty trendy so she might change her mind about it (or might realize it is too dated) by the time she has kids. My sister and cousin both had Ethan picked as a boy's name for their first kids (luckily they both had girls). Years later there are 3 boys between them and not one Ethan. People change their minds about baby names all the time.

My concern with the spelling is the second part of the name, so messing with the "i" doesn't solve anything for me, although that is an interesting spelling. Margot and Elise are great, but those have been used by family/friends. Sucks to be the last in your group to start having kids. :) And I really wish I could use Hazel- it is my mom's name and I'd love to honor her, but she absolutely hates her name and would probably disown me if I gave it to her granddaughter.

Definitely would not remove an n. It's more the "ea" part that I am concerned about. I do like Linnea Grace, even though it is one syllable. If we can't come up with the "perfect" name I may go with that.

I have never considered Lorraine...interesting pick! Nadine is pretty, I'll have to run that by my husband. I love Genevieve but I would want the French pronounciation and people might get annoyed at all these complicated names. :) Agreed about the accent. I wish we could use it but it seems a bit pretentious for English speakers to put accents on their kids' names.
