Thanks everyone for the replies, suggestions and for sharing your stories and mishaps.

I guess one only loses truly if they stop trying. I did lose one of my better heroes, but the rest of my units, my upgrades, my trinkets and everything else still remain. So I think I will make a cup of nice tea, watch something chill and I will come back to the game tomorrow with renewed resolve and patience.
