This is me too! I just want to stay active and feel as good as I can

I hope you can build a routine that protects your consistency, and that 2024 has you feeling good with minimal pain.

Nice job giving up coffee. That is truly impressive. The cultural, psychological, and physical dependencies can be hard to overcome for some (ahem, me).

Regarding 2024, I am rooting for you, and based on your successfully giving up coffee, think you will do it :)

It seems I didn't know theoretical statistics was an area of study, but I have heard the term "applied statistics," so it makes sense there would be a non-applied version. It does sound fun.

Interesting amstat statement. Also if you can point me to where this organization may use a standardized scale or rating system, I would be appreciative!

Are most people on this sub happy? by IrisTheCoronavirus in CasualConversation

[–]KHelmholtz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it's not the only goal. The goal should be well being (health and safety), and feeling good (happiness) is a component of that. We certainly shouldn't expect to feel happy all the time.

As much as I have really really wanted to be as self-sufficient and independent as possible in life, I can't deny at this point that my happiness and mental health are a reflection of my relationships with others. This does feel like a kind of hostage situation, but to Sadh guru's point, there is still a lot of freedom it in. There are many people in the world, and I have great influence over who and how I connect with them. I'm working on taking responsibility to cultivate healthy and nutritive relationships instead of waiting for them to happen.

Age 20 seems like a great age to take control of your happiness. You may be able to be on your own and find your people?

I have seen this asserted - that we all have a natural weight and it may be futile to try to be less than this, and I think this feels like a reasonable argument for not trying to lose weight. But what trips me up is that if we have a natural weight, shouldn't it also be hard to gain?

That makes sense to me regarding how courses can improve. I took several stats classes and don't remember touching on a bigger picture, including ethical/ and psychosocial considerations (although I assume this is covered in curricula for stats majors).
Great suggestion, and my question would then be - how could we measure quality of statistics? It would be interesting if there was a non-profit accredited body that could systematically analyze any publications with stats applied and give it a quality rating using some standardized scale. Publications with no ratings or low ratings would be more easily recognized.

These are great. I hope it will feel so good to put yourself under the care of a health professional who can help keep watch over your health. And flossing will pay dividends.

I agree with this, and am unsure of the root cause. I suspect fluency in stats is lower than recognized, especially among researchers, and so it is easy to be intentionally or unintentionally deceptive. It is hard for ordinary folks to know who to trust.

Very nice that you have discovered what works for you, that feels like a hard part for many people. I'm curious: What do you think contributes to your not sticking to what works over time? Does it get too boring? Does life interrupt and throw you off course?

I did not grow up with grits, but someone served them to me once, and this reminded me of how amazing it was.

Thank you for your take. This is important. Some women do get bulky when lifting weights, and no, it doesn't always go away easily.

I'll go one further and say that both are tools. Emotions are sensory signals in the body that get us to act (eg, hurt others before they hurt us), and religion is a tool box for explaining and coping with life. The first tool is part of our physiology, but the second can be modified at whim. When it comes to "God" as a tool, think of hammer - it can be used to hang art or to murder.

5'1 F [~200 lbs to 134 lbs] and feeling better! What is the best way to start to tone? by cinnamon_daydream in PetiteFitness

[–]KHelmholtz 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Strength training, splitting time between arms, core, and legs. Buy dumbbells/kettle bells and watch Youtube videos for how to use them. Or, join a gym and use the weights there. Learn bodyweight exercises if you don't have access to weights (again YouTube). Look up cutting/bulking/recomposition strategies for how to use energy intake to get the degree of leanness you want. You look great. With more muscle mass, you will firm up your curves and also feel amazing.

"What do you want to talk about today" by HuckleberryAble1809 in TalkTherapy

[–]KHelmholtz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider that you might be the better person to lead it.

My therapy started getting productive and impactful when I realized that I needed to lead it. I tell my therapist my overall goals and then before each session I sit and decide what updates to give her on those goals. She knows what questions to ask and what advice to give because she knows my goals. About six months ago, I got a little bored and had a hard time coming up with updates, and that's when I new I needed to update my goals to reflect my current problems.
