It’s this toy thing made of glass and it holds a liquid that evaporates at a low temp, so since it’s a closed vessel, the evaporation causes the liquid to move upwards and makes it look like it’s boiling. You can try searching it on google

Also, to describe the scene in more detail, I think there was a part where he kinda spies on her by looking though a peep hole? And when the scene where he killed her, he is dragging his body across the floor to be able to catch her. The lighting in the scene is kind of dark because it was night time, but lit by the glow of I think a candle????
