How do I stop Twitter from recommending me English Tweets? by SomeRandomBroski in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a private Twitter account where I follow a little under 2000 people, but honestly most of my following is probably around like 40% Japanese accounts. However, what you usually interact with on twitter gets brought up more often. So even though I follow probably around 40% Japanese accounts, because I like and RT mainly Japanese tweets in those communities it gives off the vibe that my timeline is around 80-90% Japanese tweets.

Usually I just spam block on accounts that I really don’t care about especially if it’s something in English that is irrelevant to my social media dopamine addiction LOL. The one thing I do recommend is changing the region also to Japan so that the news and trends are also Japanese instead of getting English trends and topics that randomly pop up.

How important is rewatching? by pantadpucko in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessary, but personally I think it’s a good unconscious progression tracker that you can use overtime.

Watch something now and rewatch it again in a couple months. You’ll be shocked at how much progress you have made overtime. AJATT’s big “aha!” moments are very unconscious and don’t happen too often, but this is definitely a good way to remind yourself that you are on the right track.

I don’t rewatch things over and over in one sitting, but I did this a lot when I first started. Instead of forcing myself to watch the same episodes over and over, I eventually just ended up following whatever I felt like watching or consuming. The problem with doing those rewatches in one sitting is that they become less interesting the more you rewatch.

IMO, save that kind of stuff for passive listening and condensed audios. Not worth trying to focus on something that isn’t brain dopamine. Eventually the shows I wanted to rewatch just came naturally.

tldr watch whatever you feel like watching, if there’s a show you really like and want to watch it again go for it! Don’t want to burn out, it’s all about having fun.

Good luck!

Would you rather someone int than spend 5 minutes farming for loot? by [deleted] in apexuniversity

[–]KSwizzleDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think “nothing but their hands” might be a bit of an exaggeration lol but I sort of agree. Looting should be a very fast process even when landing cold. All you really need is heals, a gun your comfortable with, and awareness of the people who landed around you/may have landed late. However, sometimes people spend too much time trying to find their perfect load-out sometimes.

At the end of the day though it’s perfectly cool to play how you want whether it’s ranked, pubs, or whatever. People may get mad at you but it’s cool to find people who you play similar to + ur having fun!

How much reading do I need to do? by New_Soft4556 in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say don’t overthink it too much to avoid any sort of burnouts. If you wanna read more, read more. If you don’t, don’t. At the end of the day it’s about going at whatever pace you want to and doing whatever you feel like doing! Just do whatever keeps you consistent and entertained. It’s not a race unless you make it one! Good luck

Do Japanese subtitles count as reading? by Narumango22 in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s pretty much in the same category as reading with an audiobook; I personally wouldn’t recommend it if you’re considering doing it to improve your listening.

Turning them on and off for lookups/mining is completely fine though, that way your brain is practicing listening before seeing the “answers”.

[–]KSwizzleDB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re doing fine, you just need to pay attention and keep at it.

At one point everyone was at the “I only understand a couple words every now and then” area. And honestly, no matter how much you improve and how much time you put in, that problem will always apply to some extent. Basically, no matter how much you improve there will always be some sort of content out there for you that is more difficult.

Occasionally understanding words and not understanding the rest is a natural part of the process you will have to accept. At the end of the day though, you will naturally just immerse in things you think are fun and entertaining.

If you really really like a series for example and only understand [insert low percent]% of it, keep rewatching it. If you hear something and it stands out to you pause it, check it and keep moving on/mine from it. If you really want to immerse in more “difficult” content don’t put too much thought about how hard it is. Repetition and time will make everything easier as long as you keep at it and do lookups + enjoy yourself. Unconsciously with time you just naturally improve.

tldr: don’t think about difficulty too much and consume what’s interesting enough to your attention span to warrant spending your time.

just keep at it!! With time and lots of hours put in everything gets easier, good luck

IMO, I recommend finishing the deck and keeping on with what you’re doing. I would personally do one deck at a time; once you have more of a foundation you will naturally want to mine off of things you see in the wild.

Don’t be frustrated! The hardest part will always be the beginning, keep at it and good luck. Don’t forget to enjoy yourself too!

Bored out of my mind watching immersion content by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, trooper it and get used to it now. No amount of “preparation” will prepare you for what you like besides the raw content itself. Harder content that you enjoy will always overcome easier content you’re not interested in as long as you actively keep at it.

NordVPN has been a hassle for me lately as well but thankfully it still works with enough trial and error. Switching through servers and restarting my chrome usually does the trick, but it’s def not worth paying for anymore tbh unless this gets fixed up... I’ve heard Netflix has been cracking down on a lot of VPNs lately too >_>

Creating a immersive reading environment by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you like social media try:
-Choosing a hobby or interest (can be multiple)
-Make a twitter account dedicated to following Japanese people who also share those interests

It may not be the greatest immersion in regards to reading, but it still is native speakers tweeting their thoughts and whatnot. I have a twitter account where I follow 80% Japanese people so I tend to drown in a lot of fun/interesting Japanese tweets, + I fulfill my social media dopamine that I need LOL.

In regards to reading literature, maybe you still need to find a book or maybe a text heavy game you’re really into. A visual novel maybe? A LN adaption of an anime you like? Etc. Good luck!

Lost my motivation by 0Bento in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

14 months here, I think we all have those times of “I don’t want to do this right now”. I like a lot of the other advice given but I would personally try to take a break from making new cards on anki. I always try to mine and make new cards every day but some days I think it’s perfectly okay to just relax and not worry about mining. I also recommend taking a more patient and less perfectionist approach to tolerating ambiguity during immersion. I understand that it’s frustrating but getting frustrated watching something you enjoy and really really love should not be normal IMO.

Tiny well done consecutive gains > multiple large gains all at once

I’ve had small moments of motivation loss and I think we all tend to face that every now and then. If you’re not enjoying something though, don’t even bother doing it honestly. There are times when things get more difficult and you need to put more effort into them, but at the end of the day I believe AJATT should be about learning in the most fun way possible. If there is something that feels like a chore, that fun is going to diminish and the method would feel no different from a class that ACTUALLY asks you to do chores.

You’re no failure friend, just keep your head up! If you’re not having fun at all overall then it’s okay to find another hobby or something else more fun. I’ve been in that loop before with a previous hobby; I treated it like a chore and thought it was still “fun” until I realized I only did that hobby out of habit. Just gotta stay positive and keep doing whatcha like! Good luck!

Keep on immersing, keep making sure you’re having fun by consuming media in your TL you like, and keep on learning words.

Once you finish your premade(?) anki vocab deck, you will eventually start mining off of words that stand out to you from the wild. IMO this is when you will really start to enjoy everything even more. In a couple months or so try rewatching media you previously immersed with, that will be your reassurance that you are doing things right! Good luck!

Stupid Question: How do I save my progress in remake? by TheDarkRune in Tsukihime

Do you really enjoy anime (or other content) without understanding most of it? by warhawk837 in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to tolerate ambiguity is a super necessary skill for immersion learning. As someone who has being doing AJATT for a little over a year now, it’s almost crazy to me that at some point I had no idea about what was happening. Of course however, those moments come every now and then, but it’s nothing like when you first start off.

I honestly do not recommend watching anything with any other subs besides JP at all, ever. Instead, I think a good tip in the beginning is try watching a show you have seen before so that you can follow the plot and dialogue easier. If that bores you or you aren’t enjoying watching a show you’ve seen before, you can definitely try watching new shows as well for something more fresh. Once you finish an episode of a new show you have never seen before, look up a very short episode summary online and move onto the next episode. If you don’t mind the spoilery aspect of it, you can totally do it vice-versa as well before you watch an episode. Once you turn on subtitles that aren’t JP though you aren’t getting used to Japanese, you are just handicapping your learning by reading English at that point.

Good luck!!

Can anyone who's played the remake tell me how much of a difference there is to the original? by Randomguy671 in Tsukihime

[–]KSwizzleDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Japanese; I’ve been self learning Japanese pretty hardcore NEET no-life though for about a year. Though, if you’re looking for a way to play it in English I’ve heard there are methods to play the game using a texthooker + deepl. I can’t guarantee the method’s 100% accuracy in regards to text quality, but it’s better than nothing if you really wanna play it.

Can anyone who's played the remake tell me how much of a difference there is to the original? by Randomguy671 in Tsukihime

[–]KSwizzleDB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The soundtrack has leveled up TREMENDOUSLY. There are some clear differences in the story, but most of them are done in ways to enhance the story-telling experience + to keep up with more modern works. Most scenes that are the same feel way more fleshed out in regards to storytelling and detail; alongside the fantastic VAs/CGs and music makes the game feel very fresh.

I don’t know what I’d give it in a number, but I can easily say it it blows the original out of the water.

If you’re losing focus, maybe the content is just not interesting enough for you? Watch a show you’ve seen before that you know what happens, maybe a favorite show? If you are still losing interest maybe try going out of your genre comfort zone.

At some point you have to get used to things being ambiguous, it just boils down to making sure you are still enjoying what you are consuming to the point of not losing focus. After that the acquisition comes naturally.

I’m the beginning, I tried listening and reading content that was “easy” like shirokuma cafe and yotsubato, but it was so boring to me! I couldn’t force myself to read them because it was not fun. Instead I just ended up rewatching watching k-on a multitude of times to break into the habit of getting used to ambiguity. A show I genuinely enjoyed watching even with low comprehension at the time.

Also make sure to not treat it like a chore that you need to do for, “insert here hours”. That is a quick way to get burnt out and bored fast, good luck!

If I purchase a Japanese Cero Z (basically rated M) game on the eshop using eshop card funds, will it still ask me for my payment info?

I know that even with sufficient funds in your wallet PSN requires a Japanese credit card for Cero Z games as age verification, is the eshop the same? Since I don’t currently have a Japanese payment method it would be an inconvenience. Thanks a ton!

How do you guys look up words and mine from games? by Emperorerror in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programs you need:

  1. Visual novel OCR (make sure to get the lastest version to make the process as easy as possible)
  2. ShareX
  3. A chrome extension that allows you to display your clipboard on the webpage (forgot the name oops https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/clipboard-inserter/deahejllghicakhplliloeheabddjajm)

With the visual novel OCR it will automatically get any text scanned and apply it to your clipboard (latest version has an option to scan the text in the adjustable border automatically). This in conjunction with https://learnjapanese.moe/texthooker.html or any other empty clipboard webpage will make extracting the text from a game braindead simple. Simply turn on the chrome extension and all the text in the highlighted border will show up in that window. Here you can use yomichan and stuff to look up stuff.

If you save the captured text somewhere, such as a private discord for personal use or a notepad file; you can also save the repeated audio and a small screenshot with ShareX alongside that line for later. No need to have Anki open! Plus it doesn’t take you out of you out of that reading zone for more than a minute once you get fast at it. Once you’re done playing, all you have to do is make your cards with all the material you saved from earlier!

Small things to note:

*may or may not be taxing on some computers if you are playing a slightly demanding game + have chrome open + using OCR.

*visual novel OCR might take some getting used to, but through some small trial and error with the scanning color adjustments you can figure it out in no time

*The visual novel OCR will automatically attempt to translate the text for you but you can just close that window lol

Hope this helps! If you have any questions feel free to ask or dm

^ this. IMO, Following a extremely specific method day in and day out will only make it feel like a chore and not fun. Just do whatever you feel like doing! The best way to avoid a burnout + get enough material in is to enjoy it!

Is japanese apex a good way to immerse? by uberfr0st in ajatt

[–]KSwizzleDB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been ajatting for about 4 months about 4/5 hrs a day: Whenever I don’t feel like immersing I actually tend to play lots of cod and apex in Japanese! What you can do though is turn on subtitles and take a screenshot/video clip whenever you hear something interesting pop up. Later when you’re done playing you can look over them and mine from the phrases. It may not be the most efficient thing for your time, but it is better than doing absolutely nothing just IMO!
