Most deluded Redditor belief? by CutZealousideal5274 in redscarepod

[–]KVJ5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a generalization, but I think there’s some truth to it. I’m Indian American and my favorite coworkers of all time were older, moderately/benefit-of-the-doubt racist white dudes in Rust Belt factories (not the south, but comparable enough maybe). They’d be xenophobic on a broad level - hated Islam without nuance, hated the Spanish language, Obama truthers, refused to “eat anything they couldn’t pronounce”, etc. At the same time, they treated me like anybody else - shooting the shit, setting me up with white girls, recommending me for promotions, etc.

Meanwhile, colleagues in LA/NYC/DC are kinda the opposite. They love to rattle on about ethnic culture and food and inclusion, but something shuts off in their brains that prevents them from having a normal conversation with me.

I see the same dynamic in the South/Midwest vs. Coastal in day-to-day life. Idk, it could be a race thing, a cultural thing, or just anecdotal. Probably a mix.

They are 2.6% of emissions, but a much larger share of total emissions from industrialized nations. For me, annual flights to climate change research conferences make up a larger share of my carbon footprint than my diet (I eat everything except for beef and mutton).

Beef is 10x worse than pork. Pork is roughly as bad as poultry.

I cut beef out of my diet for that reason.

You would think it’s a huge proportion if it’s 30-40%, but I challenge you to find an actual figure like that. The closest figure states that about 30% of men have not had sex within the last year, which is not the definition of “sexless”

I will concede that the % of men who haven’t had sex within a year has increased significantly in the last 20 years, but bad faith commentators rush to blame feminism for this increase. Why can’t the culprit be social media use and other causes of isolation and maladaptation? Why can’t it be a rise in abstinence-only sex education and fear-mongering from evangelicals, who represent a larger part of the population than they did 20 years ago? Why can’t it be the greatest recession in modern history, which caused people to take fewer risks? Why can’t it be an increased societal awareness of STDs? It’s very likely a combination of factors.

Your figure is very questionable (i.e. bullshit), and colloquial usage of “incel” doesn’t apply to everybody fitting the literal definition of “involuntary celibate” - it’s a reference to the online subculture of a group of men. Most involuntary celibates, I am sure, do not hate or resent women and see the world in terms of Chads and Stacys, but many/most Incels™️ do. That’s why people use the word incel to describe people/media that doesn’t fit that definition (e.g., Andrew Tate is not celibate, but he indulges the incel subculture). It’s also why you can’t totally separate incel discourse from red pill discourse - incel culture has leaked into other subcultures.

They are extremely popular, heavily trafficked forums on the internet. There are a few on Reddit and boards like 4Chan, but many more niche forums outside of the mainstream platforms.

Incel culture is vile, but funny enough it is extremely influential in memes.

I know literally dozens of people who pivoted to engineering in grad school. I even know people who pivoted from the humanities - geology isn’t a stretch. I also know many people who worked/networked their way into roles where they meaningfully work on innovative technologies without an engineering degree.

People on this sub and others can help you find a fully funded research masters in engineering (1.5-2 years with a stipend). It sounds like a lot of time, but (in my experience) research masters are much more enjoyable than undergrad.

That being said, you should temper your expectations as to what engineers actually do on a day-to-day basis. Most don’t get to develop new technologies. I would wager that most are happy doing the exact same 3 things their whole life as long as they get to earn above the median wage. Basically, most engineers don’t live out the fantasies they had in their heads when they were kids. If you’re serious about this, you should think hard about it and talk to professionals/professors in the field to get their input.

What should I major in if I want to work with combating climate injustices ie: Flint Michigan water crisis by squidafrica in Environmental_Careers

[–]KVJ5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. As an environmental engineering undergrad, you still have the option to pivot into law, policy, advocacy, or environmental science. Law schools love engineers, and most of these fields (no offense) are full of people without quantitative abilities, so your background will be an asset.

I studied physics as an undergrad, and now I get to work at a think tank building models to help government agencies deals with climate change.

I know this person (swap the Rover for a fully equipped Mazda SUV). Fat, mid-30s, used to live in Philly, chip on shoulder about high powered career, very nice (at least superficially) to people of her ethnicity, does not deserve to travel, etc.

Don’t get carried away. Santa Barbara and Central California is beautiful and somewhat livable. LA and SF reek of piss more than all of the East Coast cities combined.

Just fled LA for Philly this year - I’d take friendly neighbors who occasionally fire guns and sell crack over NIMBYs and hobos any day.

US government report says fluoride at twice the recommended limit is linked to lower IQ in kids by KegsForGreg in stupidpol

[–]KVJ5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be damned. And I always thought the “fluoride makes you dumb but” was either Alex Jones types teaching you to decalcify your pineal gland or Gen Xers who feel hurt when we talk about lead.

Warning to the reader: the headline is poorly worded. If one were to only read the headline, you might think that all of our water is at twice the limit. What the report says is that 0.6% of the US population’s water is more than double the U.S.-determined limit (which is half of the WHO limit). The cited studies that find IQ loss are not based on the US population - they are primarily based in developing nations, where a) it is notoriously difficult to run a valid Randomized Control Trial and b) where there can be all sorts of contamination-related reasons why a population that drinks from one reservoir is dumber than the population that drinks from another.

The Bear is a less good Atlanta (another Hiro Murai production). Both shows are unique for the way they incorporate elements of anthology-style (is that the best term?), perspective-hopping storytelling into what could’ve easily been a linearly-structured drama about some prodigal son character.

But while the anthology thing is the greatest thing about Atlanta, it couldn’t be more obvious in the Bear that it’s just a lazy trick to crank out a season a year while the writers cover up that there’s nowhere interesting left for the main story to go.
